Disaster Action Movies to Watch on Halloween

Sylvia Cochran

Doom, gloom, death, and fake blood are the hallmarks of Halloween. Usually it is the horror movie that gets TV playtime. Why not shake things up with disaster action movies instead? Offering up emotional trouble, darkness, and an end to life as we know it, they are perfect substitutes for the sometimes boring gore of slasher films. What's hot?

"The Core" by Jon Amiel

Director Jon Amiel proposed to nuke the earth's core in 2003. The film's plot thrives on bad science, questionable cause-and-effect thinking, and the been-there-done-that plot device that depicts the government as the real enemy. Even so, it is an action movie to its core (pun intended); if you can suspend disbelief and a high school science education long enough to get into the flow of the events, you cannot help but find yourself at the edge of your seat.

The impending doom of life as we know it makes "The Core" a fit bit of entertainment for any Halloween party.

"Deep Impact" by Mimi Leder

You might remember Mimi Leder from directing the 2000 drama "Pay It Forward." Prior to that movie, she invested her vision and talent in the 1998 disaster action film "Deep Impact." This time meteors will potentially make life on earth extinct. Atomic blasts are supposed to incinerate one such deadly rock but only manage to split it into two lethal meteors.

As an action movie, this film leaves little to be desired. Whether in space, on a meteor, or on Earth, physical prowess and explosions reign supreme. What more do you need for Halloween?

"Armageddon" by Michael Bay

Why not make it an end-of-the-world double header for the Halloween movie marathon? Bay-directed "Armageddon" was released in the same year as "Deep Impact." It too featured a threat from a space rock and the potential for salvation from nuclear bombs. This movie has action hero Bruce Willis in the lead role, which instantly endears it to genre aficionados. Willis does not disappoint, and if mass destruction makes for a good setting for your Halloween get-together, be sure to include this film.
