Disaster Preparation - Being Ready for Severe Winter Storms

Lance Esondi
If you live in a climate that has some severe winter weather, you know that at any time you might have a severe winter storm that could disrupt your life for a few days or up to a few weeks at a time. Each winter somewhere, there are families that get cut off of their power and trapped in their homes for up to a few weeks and have to make it through the weather before life returns back to normal. You need to prepare for these types of disasters just in case.

Do you have a plan? What will your family do if this happens to you? Do you have the supplies to make it through a few week scenario? If not, you should follow this guide.

Start by having the food, water, and other supplies that you need stored away so that you can rely on them when needed. This isn't something that is complicated as it won't take that much time or space to make sure you have what you need. If you need certain medicines, try to have a few weeks extra in case you can't make it to the store. Take these items and check on them regularly once you put this kit together to make sure everything is in good shape. It is also a good idea to keep some of these supplies in your car in case you get stuck on the side of the road.

Heat is an issue during the winter months. Without power, many won't have a way of heating their homes. Come up with an off grid solution to having your own heat. This could be propane heaters or other solutions. Make sure that it's indoor safe as you don't want anyone to get hurt. Keep enough blankets at home that you could bundle up and stay warm if things got really bad. If you have a fireplace, keep plenty of wood on hand to keep everyone warm.

If you have everything you need, try to include some entertainment with this as well. Being stuck for a few weeks with nothing to do is boring. Have things you can do with your family to keep everyone occupied. This will cut down on the stress levels a bit as well.
