Disastrous Weight Loss Strategies that You Should Always Avoid!

Nancy Yu
In today's society, almost every magazine and every TV screen is plastered with stick skinny girls with perfect bodies. Thus, our desire to lose weight is like a burning flame threatening to consume everything. However, there have been many diet fads lately that are outright harmful to the body and should be avoided no matter what! Read on to find out what diets to skip this year in your New Year's Resolution.

Mistake No.1: Starving then binge eating

There's been a piece of news circulating lately that claims that a 21 year old girl has stomach cancer. How can a 21 year old girl, who's in the prime of her youth, contract such a deadly disease? The answer is in her eating habits. To lose weight, this girl only ate a banana each day and drank water. After much torture, she finally became skinny but she was constantly hungry. Thus, she binge ate once in a while and it quickly became a cycle of starving-binge eating. In the end, her stomach started to rebel.

Health Reminder: If you starve yourself, your body will exact revenge ten years down the road.

If you start to starve yourself at 25 years old, ten years later your health will suffer greatly. Starving yourself will allow your stomach to get only a little bit of food which will damage your stomach in the long run. In addition, your stomach is constantly under the torture of the very acidic stomach acid produced. In the long term, this can greatly increase your chance of getting stomach cancer.

Mistake No. 2: forcing yourself to throw up, over-rigorous exercise, and weight loss pills

These types of behaviors can result in anorexia or bulimia. A certain clinic in Shanghai studied the number of anorexia and bulimia cases that it had over the course of one year and found that the majority of patients were female and their number one reason for contracting the illness was their fear of gaining weight. The symptoms of anorexia and bulimia include over-rigorous exercise, intake of laxatives and forcing oneself to throw up. The scary part of these illnesses is that once one gets it, it's very difficult to treat.

Health Reminder: When you diet, it's okay to decrease the quantity but not the quality.

Even if you want to diet, you should still eat at least three meals a day but control your intake of fatty foods. It is not advised to decrease your intake of fruits, vegetables, and milk because milk contains calcium which is very important for the body.

Mistake No. 3: Only eating apples for meals

The apple diet has become very popular in recent years but is very deadly for the body. Not eating any type of main meal and only eating fruits and vegetables will cause malnutrition. If you don't eat meat or nuts or any of your main meals, you will lack calcium, fat, and carbohydrates which will deplete your body of essential nutrients and cause your bones to become weaker.

Health Reminder: If you only eat fruits and vegetables, your immunity will go down

The American cancer society has conducted a study with more than 100 overweight female participants. Three-fourths of these participants have gone on yo-yo diets and every time they dieted, they lost more than 10 pounds. When testing these women for T cells, researchers found that women who have gone on diets more than fives have lowest number of cytotoxic killer T cells which protect our body against foreign invaders. Meanwhile, women who have kept a stable weight within a year have the greatest number of cytotoxic T cells.
