Disc Golf in Scottsdale, Arizona

So one of the greatest sports I have found in quite a while would have to be disc golf (Frisbee golf). It's incredibly cheap to get started, all of the courses here in Arizona are free to play and easy to find, and it's a great way to kill a few hours time. If it's your first time ever disc golfing, then this is going to easily qualify as a cheap trip, if you've been before and already have all of the discs that you need then consider this a free trip in the Phoenix area.

Since it was Krystina's first time, we had to go to the Scottsdale course, because they have a disc golf shop called Spinners right there on the course, and I think it's the only store in the valley. The easiest way to get to Spinners, is to take the 101 North from the 202 interchange. Take the McDowell Road exit and turn left (West) to Miller Road. Turn Left (South) on Miller and turn into the parking lot on your left (East), you can't miss Spinners. The people in this shop will take care of you, and if you've never disc golfed before, they'll teach you how and sometimes even take you down for a hole or two. I highly recommend taking advantage of their used discs as you'll be able to get 2-3 discs for around $15-$20.

The course itself is only a couple hundred feet from the pro shop in the park down below. The park itself is beautiful, lots of trees and a few lakes with a large stream running down the middle of everything. Each hole is clearly marked with a dark green concrete slab and a sign that will show you where you are throwing towards. Pick up a course map from Spinners if you want to keep track of your score, and if there is another small group playing you can probably tag along with them to learn the sport. Don't be shy around the experienced players, most of them are more than willing to help out new players.

The Scottsdale Course is one of about 5 or 6 disc golf courses here in the Phoenix area, I'll be doing reviews of each course as we manage to play them. As for the Scottsdale course, it's a great course for beginners because of the fact that you can get all the equipment that you'll need, some professional advice, and all of the holes are very well marked and easy to play. The main downside of this course is the fact that there are quite a few holes that are right along the lakes and streams so you run the chance of losing a disc in the water. There are also quite a few people in the park so make sure you don't bean a biker in the back of the head with a disc, it's a quick way to get thrown into the lake!

Total cost of this trip - $10 to get a used driver and putter for Krystina (This trip is free once you already have the discs!)
