Disciplining Your Child
It is the age old question. How to I discipline my child? Whether you have a child that is in elementary school, junior high or even high school, all parents and teachers struggle with the best method for imposing discipline that will be effective.
Sometimes taking away privileges work. Sometimes it does not.
Different methods work for different children. Make sure whatever method you choose is age appropriate for your child. For example, the punishment shown below is NOT age appropriate for a 5 year old.
Once my son was around 10 years old, losing privileges as a form of punishment, did not work for him. He simply did not care.
And he would tell me just that. "That's fine". And of course I would become enraged and try to take more things away. It just did not work.
I found that having him do some type of physical work that was boring and useless was more effective than anything else.
To get started you need to have a phone book or dictionary readily available. You will also need paper and multiple pens, each pen in a different color.
Next is the fun part - Punishment that your child will hate so much, he will think twice before getting in trouble next time.
Tear a page out of the phone book or copy a page from the dictionary. Have you child sit at a table, perhaps at the kitchen table or in an office. If your child is easily distracted, perhaps sitting in an office, away from other people will work best.
Have them hand write the page from the bottom up, backwards. Each letter in a different color ink.
This is a long punishment. It is useless work. It will take a while for them to complete. And they will have to concentrate in order to write the words backwards and in different colors. It will teach them a lesson.
Make sure that you explain to your child why he is being punished. Make sure that he understands that this punishment is a direct result of his behavior. Make them responsive for their actions.

Post a CommentWell, I guess this could work, but it's been my personal experience that truly related consequences work better (as in, if the child breaks an item, he must repair or replace it, and so on) and create less resentment and hostility than making your child do busy work just because it's "fun" to make them squirm.
