Discount Insurance Isn't Just a Myth

Discount auto insurance isn't a myth. However, sometimes you do get what you pay for, so watch out for scams. Discount car insurance can be as simple as a talk with your current provider. The potential hundreds you could be saving a year could go towards that new car you've been pining over.

~Look at Your Current Coverage

What coverage do you really need? Look over your current coverage and you may find many things you don't need. Also, increasing your deductible on certain types of coverage can greatly decrease your rates. Unless you're an extremely reckless driver, a higher deductible on collision coverage could drop your rates a $100 or more a year. Don't sell yourself short, however. Be realistic. Be sure you have enough in your savings account to cover your deductibles just in case you do have an accident.

~Talk with Your Current Provider

As mentioned above, you may be missing out on discounts through your current auto insurer. Many insurers now offer money back or discounts for certain things. Multiple vehicles, safe driving, anti-theft devices, and safety devices are just a few of the discounts some auto insurance companies are offering. Check with your local representative to see if you qualify.

~Finding a New Provider

Sometimes the only way to find discount auto insurance is by finding a new insurer. Depending on your shopping style, you can check your local yellow pages or do a search for "discount auto insurance". Most insurers provide free quotes no matter how you contact them. You will need to know your VIN, or vehicle identification number, current insurer, and number of miles your drive to and from work and if applicable, school.

Discuss any discounts that may be available to you and ask how long these discounts last. It's important to also ask about the frequency of rate increases. Don't let any one insurer sway you until you've research all your options.

~Stay Out of Accidents

Probably the best way to find a discount auto policy is by being a safe driver. Obviously, some accidents are unavoidable, but others are. Stay off of cell phones, pay attention to the road instead of music and passengers, and stick close to the speed limit. Tickets and wrecks are two of the quickest ways to sky-rocket your insurance rates.

Research and staying safe are the two best ways to find discounts auto insurance. Even your current policy can become a discounted policy by simply talking with your insurer.
