Discover Who You Are: Book in Review

Natasha Stiller

Almost every person spends time considering their purpose in life, what gifts they have to offer in their careers, families, friendships, and to themselves. "Discover Who You Are" combines personality tests, skills assessments and gifts to help individuals understand their unique purpose called LifeKeys.

The first portion of the book takes you through your life gifts, which are broken down into several categories: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional. While people have specific qualities that might be exhibited within these main life gifts, one is generally more pronounced than others and after the assessment you will determine a set of three that fit your life gifts.

You can use this description to help you better understand some of the career choices that you have made as well as where your talents fit with careers that you would like to embark on.

The next portion of the book takes you through spiritual gifts: Gifts from the Heart (Helps, Hospitality, Mercy, Faith, and Giving), Gifts of Proclamation (Evangelism, Discernment, Knowledge, Prophecy, and Wisdom), Gifts of Action (Leadership, Administration, Shepherding, Encouragement/Counseling, and Apostleship), and Gifts of Inspiration (Healing, Miracles, Speaking in Tongues, and Interpretation of Tongues). There is a great description of each of the gifts and their corresponding attributes. The book explores the connection between the individualized life gifts in conjunction with the spiritual gifts to help people truly discern their purpose in life and how to connect your life gifts to your spiritual gifts in the workplace.

The last portion of the book focuses on the Myers-Briggs personality assessment tool, which allows individuals to better understand how they function based on their personality in life, whether that be social settings, the work place or familial relationships. With the Myers-Briggs you assess if you are Introverted or Extroverted (this refers to how you gain energy), Sensing or Intuition (refers to how we take in information), Thinking or Feeling (refers to how we make decisions, and Judging and Perceiving (refers to how we approach life).

Prior to reading this book, I was familiar with the Myers-Briggs personality assessment as well as the different spiritual gifts as I'd completed personal assessments before. I had not considered combining the information that I knew about myself to conclude career choices, goals, or purpose. It was an interesting read for this information and definitely allows individuals to discern their purpose.
