Danielle Friedl
The middle section of the state of North Carolina, with it's beautiful landscape of gently rolling foothills, is known as the heartland. The climate of this area, while still enjoying all four seasons, is very mild. Winter temperatures may creep down as low as 42 degrees, while summers enjoy a pleasant average of 77 degrees. With days and nights so mild it's the absolute perfect location for camping and getting in touch with nature.

The Hiddenite Family Campground in Hiddenite, North Carolina along the South Yadkin River is open year round, and hosts everything from primitive campsites to sites with full RV hook ups. 30+ acres make up the peaceful wooded surroundings. Located just 12 miles north of Statesville, Hiddenite is a true family campground. They have a large pool and playground for all campers to enjoy, clean wash facilities and throughout the summer they host special theme weekends like Western Fun and Carnival Weekend. It's almost like an outdoor resort!

Fiddler's Grove Campground in Union Grove, North Carolina is boasted as the home of the longest running old time fiddle contest in North America. Even if you don't want to come for the festival, you will certainly enjoy the shady campsites and nearby fishing pond. Fiddler's Grove has one of the more relaxing atmospheres for camping, with very little in the way of extra entertainment. This is a perfect place to just get out and enjoy nature.

VanHoy Farms Family Campground is another great family site, including a pool with musical entertainment and special events all season long. There is a nearby Amish village that offers fresh breads and produce, and apple and peach orchards in close proximity as well. Camping sites range from extremely primitive to cabins with air and heat for rent. VanHoy is easily accessible from many areas of North Carolina, and is a short hour drive north from Charlotte.

Wildlife Woods on Lake Norman is a year round camp facility that has it all. A swimming pool, boat rentals, live band on the weekends and an activity clubhouse that runs bingo games, among other things is just a small part of all this campground has to offer. Full hook up sites are available, as well as tent pads lake side. Wash house facilities with hot running water are also provided. Free miniature golf and a game room are on the premises as well. Wildlife Woods has lots of family fun combined with all the necessary facilities.

These are the main campgrounds that offer tent camping in the heartland of North Carolina. With varying degrees of amenities offered you can certainly find a campground that fits your specific needs and desires, whether it's a completely unencumbered step back into nature, or a fun filled family vacation under the stars. The climate of the heartland allows outdoor adventures for serious campers year round and these campground provide a perfect spot to harmonize with nature. Whether you want to pitch a tent and really rough it or rent a cabin, there's something here for every outdoor enthusiast.
