10 Most Popular Retirement Havens Abroad
Kathleen Peddicord, who has been traveling abroad for the last 25 years, says Belize is number 2 on her list of The 10 Most Popular Retirement Havens. She list them on her website in an article entitled Live, Retire, Invest Overseas :
#1 Panama
#2 Belize
#3 France
#4 Malaysia
#5 Ecuador
#6 Argentina
#7 Uruguay
#8 Croatia
#9 Dominican Republic
#10 Chile
Why Leave the USA?
Well for starters the cost of living is what it was in the USA in the 60's, which means their retirement dollar goes a long way. You can rent a nice 3 bedroom 2 bath in Belize for around $850 per month. It is a tropical climate and most all Belizeans speak English or some form thereof. Not to mention their economy is growing so an investment in a home in Belize at zero interest or zero percentage down can net you a nice little sum in 5-7 years as their economy matures.
What About Health care Overseas?
Good question. It's excellent as good or better then here. Plus the lifestyle is healthier and more conducive to older mature folks.
Everyone is always so surprised at the fact the health care is better and cheaper. But the truth is most places overseas are better and cheaper.
In International Living's August 2010 article Look Like a Czech Model for $3,054 they say "Once you start, it's surprising how many top-class medical centers you'll find worldwide". Because overseas health care is more affordable you get to keep some of your high insurance premium's you would pay in the USA. Like 50% or more! That alone is reason to retire overseas.
What About Communications Overseas?
I have a daughter in Japan right now and with the internet I talk to her free either on my cell phone or Skype as much or more then I did when she was living stateside.
Almost all the industrial nations have wireless communications and you can stay connected as easily as you do in the USA only cheaper.
Well that's a taste of living abroad or retiring overseas were its simple, safe and fun.

Post a CommentI read the same article as you, Kirby. I'm trying to convince my husband to move back to my home (the UK) Even though a lot of things are much more expensive over there such as housing, petrol and food, health care is free. So that makes my home a winner in my book!

If it weren't got the family (who, we are fortunate) lives close-by, Belize would be looking pretty good to us!
