Originating from China, ahjongg (mahjong) is a game based on the use of tiles as game pieces in single or multiplayer gameplay. Sometimes compared to dominoes, there have been many variants of the game over the years, and throughout different cultures. Often called a game of luck and strategy, modern mahjongg video games are mainly based on matching pairs of various scattered and layered tiles, all while racing the clock. In mahjongg - Ancient Egypt, traditional matching tile gameplay is combined with ancient adventure and mystery.

In Mahjongg - Ancient Egypt, the overall theme is in the title; tile sets are decorated with hieroglyphics, while scenery includes pyramids, deserts, and more. Offering playable flexibility, two core gaming modes are available: Classic Mode, and Adventure Mode. In Classic Mode, gameplay is offered in 11 different variations with 400 different tile layouts. The included variations greatly add extra breath to overall and replay value to the game, especially when adventure mode has been completed. Examples of variations include standard , countdown, remember, ghosts, and exchange. In standard variation, Mahjongg - Ancient Egypt offers straight forward traditional gameplay where pairs of tiles need to be matched as fast as you can, while countdown alters standard by adding a countdown timer. In remember variation, symbols are only visible on tiles for a brief moment after a click. The slightly similar variation called ghosts also offers quite a challenge as tiles are not visible until they are clicked on -and even as they are, they only remain visible for only a few seconds before ghosting (turning invisible) again. In exchange, every five seconds two random tiles will be swapped with each other, making for rapid paced game play requiring a little extra eye coordination. Tile layouts are the shapes that the layered tiles create on the game board, and in all variations, there are 400 layouts available to enhance the game. Players that are feeling creative and would like to create a layout of their own can create a tile layout with the game's built in layout editor.

Mahjongg - Ancient Egypt's story mode is called Adventure Mode. In this mode, it is 1947, and you are Dr. Deanfield, an adventurer and historian who must find the Lost Temple of Osiris. By sequentially visiting 11 sites on Egypt's map, individual rounds of mahjongg must be completed in order to solve an ancient mystery. In this mode there are a variety of games to complete, each with a variety of challenges and power-ups that ultimately lend clues to the find the lost temple.

Mahjongg - Ancient Egypt is available for the Windows PC, and can be found online for purchase at Big Fish Games.
