Vincennes Indiana was the home of United States President William Henry Harrison and the birthplace of the great Red Skelton. Vincennes has many more historical attractions such as The George Roger's Clark Memorial and Historical Park, the Old Cathedral, Grouseland, the Old French House, Fort Knox II at Oubache Trails Park, Indiana Military Museum and more. You can even take a tour of the home of President William Henry Harrison or the birthplace or home of Red Skelton.
Vincennes was the location of a Revolutionary War Battle. Each year at the George Roger's Clark Memorial Park, the largest land conquest of the Revolutionary War is revisited. It is called the "Spirit of the Rendezvous" or " Rendezvous". A huge granite memorial is located on the site of the former British Fort Sackville. Fort Sackville was captured by Colonel George Rogers Clark and his troops. President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the memorial in 1936.
Grouseland saved from demolition by the Daughter of the American Revolution, is the former home of President William Henry Harrison. While living at Grouseland, William Henry Harrison governed the Indiana territory and then went on to become the 9th President of the United States. Grouseland is named for birds that Harrison loved to hunt in the surrounding areas. Grouseland was built between 1802 and 1804 and still contains President William Henry Harrison's possessions.
Vincennes University is a two-year college in Vincennes Indiana, and was founded by President William Henry Harrison. Vincennes is Indiana's first college and is also one of the oldest colleges in the United States. Vincennes University was founded in 1801 and named Vincennes University in 1806.
In 1749, Vincennes Indiana was the site of the first Catholic church in Indiana. In 1790, Knox County Indiana became the first county in Indiana with Vincennes Indiana being Knox County's county seat. In 1799, Vincennes published the first newspaper in Indiana. Vincennes Indiana was also the place of the first bank, presbyterian church, Masonic Lodge, and medical society in Indiana. For obvious reasons Vincennes is known as Indiana's First City.
