The Bordeaux Fete Vin or Wine Festival takes place every year in Bordeaux during the last week of June and spans four days. The event is held on the banks of the River Garonne in Europe's largest town square. Travelers can purchase a special "tasting" pass that will allow them to sample the best wines in the region, all in one location. Several events take place during the festival, including a barrel rolling championship, the Bacchus Banquet, a parade, and even workshops that will teach you all you need to know on the finer points of making and enjoying wine.
Le Roxy Jam Biarritz is held during the last part of June and the first week in July. You'll be able to enjoy the wonderful climate in Biarritz as you take part in one of the largest surfing festivals in the world. Female and male surfing competitions are held, and you can also enjoy open air concerts, art exhibitions and you'll even be able to rub elbows with the world's most famous surfers.
The 7eme Festival de Jazz de Sanguinet is held in Sanguinet and features some of the best jazz musicians in the world. The festival is typically held during the last week in July, but in 2006, it is taking place on July 20th. Several different types of jazz music are performed, including swing, blues, and even African jazz.
The Festival de Theatre a Sarlat or the Theater Festival in Sarlat, France takes place during the middle of July. This is a great festival for theater lovers, readers and cinemaphiles. You'll find a little bit of everything from author readings, music, meetings and debates with the public, artists and emerging talents all in one place. The entire festival is held outdoors, so you may want to bring appropriate sun protection.
Les Fetes de Bayonne or the Festival at Bayonne, occurs during the first week in August and is a rare chance to take in authentic Basque music and entertainment. The festival includes traditional songs, dancing and of course, a sampling of some incredible Basque cuisine. This is a unique festival that was first started in 1932 and has been awing tourists and locals alike each year. If you have never experienced the Basque culture, this is the perfect starting point.
And for a lot of fun, don't miss the annual Conkers Championship that is held each October in Periguex. In case you're wondering, the Conkers Championship was organized fifteen years ago by chestnut throwing enthusiasts. The movement has spread worldwide and the championship is quite a spectacle. The name "conkers" is derived from the British term for "chestnut." The championship is open to everyone and you can enjoy some great food, wine, song and of course, roasted chestnuts.
