Discover the Renovations: The St. Louis City Museum

After Years of Work, the St. Louis City Museum is a Brand New Place to Explore!

A newer St. Louis favorite, the City Museum is newly renovated and compromised of independently operated museums and hands-on activities and displays, all under one roof. Opened in 1997, the museum is housed in the 600,000 square ft. former International Shoe Company. While the museum certainly caters to the younger crowd, there is fun and education for people of any age and offers dozens of activities for the entire family. The project is the creative conception of sculptor Robert Cassilly, who not only designed the museum, continues to play an active role in it's continuing development.

Attractions to Visit:
Visit the Enchanted Caves, where you can walk right into the mouth of a life size whale, wander through the root systems of a tree, climb into a birds nest and climb, crawl or walk through an amazing cave, built within the former shoe factory's twisted spiral conveyor tunnel system. It is an amazing journey.

Venture outside and visit MonstroCity, an interactive sculpture where kids and adults can crawl, climb, or jump through an exciting jungle gym built from a castle turret, a twenty five foot tall cupola, two Saber 40 aircraft fuselages, several four foot wide wrought iron Slinkies, and a fire engine. It is a truly a wonderland.

The World Aquarium, the newest addition to the museum, is housed on the 13,500 square foot 2nd floor and features over 10,000 creatures. The exhibit allows visitors to pet stingrays and sharks, crawl through aquatic displays and play in a giant-sized sand castle beach. It is an aquatic experience you'll never forget. There is also a nice sized petting area with chinchillas and guinea pigs. The World Aquarium is an additional fee to visit.

In the evening hours, visit The Museum of Mirth, Mystery and Mayhem, where artist Bill Christman has recreated the charm of the carnival midway and roadside attractions. A Corn Dogs Through the Ages exhibit, an Elvis Channeler, and a look at the biggest pair of men's briefs in the world offers an unforgettable look into the past.

Art City allows visitors to create their own works of art or they can watch professional artists at work. The area features an array of artists, sculptors, potters and painters creating their amazing art, right where the public can see it. The Glass Studio offers demonstrations on turning molten glass into unique sculptures using a variety of different techniques, including cutting glass, glassblowing, etching, sand-casting with hot glass and glass polishing.

Other attractions to visit, include the Tiny Train Town Model Railroad, Toddler Town, Circus Day, two amazing family ball pits, and a Shoelace factory. With so many things to do at the City Museum, there is certainly something for everyone in the whole family to enjoy.

Group Activities Offered:
City Museum offers educational programs, scout activities, birthday parties, and Everyday Circus classes for groups of fifteen or more. In addition, four areas within the museum are available for private rental for special events.

Although the museum offers its own variety of special events taking place during the week, City Museum is also host to dozens of events and celebrations throughout the year, including competitions, educational events, and demonstrations.
