Discovering the Music of Paul Thorn

I Don't Get to Town Much

Okgah
For the past couple years, as part of the annual Mecca to MLB's spring training, the Cactus League in Arizona, I was introduced to Paul Thorn's music through my #1 scout Big Bobby G. "Ain't Love Strange" is the album that he starts me out on and I just go bonkers over this guy's style. "Mood Ring" is just one of those minor keyed ballads, that define Paul's style and with his story introductions, no doubt about it he drinks sweet tea from a mason jar.

So were driving all over the streets of Phoenix singing "Burn down the Trailer Park", and "Blue Stew, and there you have it, yet another spring training tradition is born.

So this March, Bobby G shows up with some new Paul musica. He has his I POD thing all ready to rock and this year it's "Long Way from Tupelo". I crack up, this is part of the tradition to get new music and that is Bobby's department, really everything is put together by Big Bob, I just have to get my airline ticket what a guy.

I am really starting to like this Paul Thorn "Starvin for your Kisses" wow I really got sideways on this one. I mean the title says it all. "I'm Still Here" is big time, influenced gospel sounds, that lift you up, with a great tempo and joyful sounds.

Now for the next six or seven days it will be the baseball, Mexican food, and massive doses of Paul Thorn. I get to town in March almost every year.

Sometime this summer, I am goofing off at work and reading some email I see one, from my partner in crime, Bobby G, with a subject line..........."Are you in?" This normally would be a clue he has some more tickets and I probably catch a Mariner's game of two. That's was just part of the deal. "Moon Man, I got tickets for Paul Thorn, are you in?" Well no need for a long drawn out story here, of course I am in. I proceed to dial it up and to my great surprise 15 dollars......Wow are you kidding me? Tractor Tavern, Ballard, Washington.....ok brother I am in.

Strategic planning begins I know Bobby has it all covered on that end...ummm company truck, awww yea that's right I need some masonry plans.......done deal. Ok rent a room, find a chess tournament and let's head to Seattle. I don't get to town much.

eBobby has it all figured out, get there early and use the power of the handicapped sticker. WE park two lawn chairs in front of the door, he has the tickets, so a show of force to get prime location in a small venue. After about an hour or so we are ushered in, and yes the best seats in the house, Bobby is the man again.

After about an hour of the, gee I can't remember band ,featuring Cosmo the magic guitar player that got way out there somewhere ,it was now time for the show. Paul and his band were on and brother let me tell you, it was worth the drive to hear this guy. He played all the songs on the "Long Way from Tupelo" CD and a few others of his most popular tunes.

Paul plays blues, country, gospel, rhythm and blues, and rock-n-roll. He is very easy for me to associate with because I know he knows what shelling peas on the front porch while drinking sweet tea, or gathering pecans, headed down a dirt road to a beaver pond to catch a few catfish. He once even fought Roberto Duran "I'd Rather be a Hammer than a Nail".

Well I don't get to town much, but a couple Mariner's games, good friends, and Paul Thorn makes me consider perhaps moving to town.
