The museum's purpose is "to inspire children of all ages to imagine, discover, and connect with their world to make a difference." It does this by creating interactive exhibits that allow children of all ages to experiment with science, art, language, writing, reading, broadcasting, and more. The museum bases a lot of its interactive exhibits on themes that periodically change. Currently, they have a theme based on the movie Robots, where all activities are based on learning about robotics, physics, movies, conservation, and the future.
When you enter the museum, you are greeted by a great ball exhibit that the kids love, using the power of air and gravity to shoot balls around a maze of loops and turns. Other very interesting exhibits are the play worlds where children can shop in a grocery store, play house in a large playhouse, pretend to be a weatherman in a working studio, play in a life-sized life-flight helicopter, or learn all about mechanics and gravity by making paper airplanes fly in a wind tunnel. In addition to those great activities, Discover Gateway also has various workshops and craft activities. Children have a great time as they learn all about science, nature, life, and much more.
Discovery Gateway also has special activities and packages for birthday parties and field trips. What student wouldn't enjoy a day of learning.
The pricing for Discovery Gateway is not cheap, but worth it for the younger children. Everyone over the age of one is $9.50.
On the negative side, the museum is very crowded, so don't expect a short afternoon. Planning is the key to having a great experience, Weekends and holidays will always be much different than planning a day out in the middle of the week. When crowded, Discovery Gateway is difficult to navigate making it more difficult for children to have a full, rewarding experience, so you may wish to call ahead and see how the lines and crowds are.
If you're looking for a fun educational time for children in Salt Lake City, consider Discovery Gateway. Children love it and parents will have a great time watching them learn.
