Dismissal of Don Imus Possible Even After Apology for Racially Charged Remarks

There is further fallout from Don Imus's remarks regarding the Rutgers women's basketball team. "Unimpressed by his on-air apology or corporate promises of a tighter leash, angry critics of nationally syndicated radio host Don Imus called Saturday for his dismissal over his racially charged comments about the mostly black Rutgers women's basketball team. 'I accept his apology, just as I want his bosses to accept his resignation,' said the Rev. Al Sharpton. He promised to picket Imus' New York radio home, WFAN-AM, unless the veteran of nearly 40 years of anything-goes broadcasting is gone within a week." (Yahoo! News article) This is not the first time that Don Imus has been in trouble for questionable comments, nor is the Rev. Al Sharpton alone in calling for Imus's ouster, even after an apology.

For those who have not heard, Imus called the Rutgers women's basketball team "'nappy headed hos' during a Wednesday morning segment of his show, which airs for millions of listeners on more than 70 stations and the MSNBC television network." (Yahoo! News article) As of this date, there is no word on whether MSNBC will continue to carry "Imus in the Morning" as part of their line-up. While the radio station has promised to reign in the controversial personality, many, including Rev. Sharpton, will accept nothing less than his resignation.

"The National Association of Black Journalists, the editor-in-chief of Essence magazine and a New York sports columnist joined the chorus against Imus. 'What he has said has deeply hurt too many people - black and white, male and female,' said NABJ President Bryan Monroe. 'His so-called apology comes two days after the fact, and it is too little, too late.' Angela Burt Murray, of Essence magazine, called on Imus' bosses to take a harder stance over his 'unacceptable' remarks. 'It needs to be made clear that this type of behavior is offensive and will not be tolerated without severe consequences,' Murray said. Columnist Filip Bondy of the Daily News, in a column headlined 'Imus spews hate, should be fired,' said the radio star 'should be axed for one of the most despicable comments ever uttered on the air.'" (Yahoo! News article)

For those who did not follow the women's NCAA basketball tournament, Rutgers lost the national championship to the University of Tennessee. The Rutgers women's basketball team included eight black women. Imus has a history of sexist and racist remarks. In the past he has made questionable remarks regarding Kylie Minogue, who was battling cancer at the time, and has referred to prominent female, African-American journalists as maids and quota hires.

Maybe some are getting a bit ahead of themselves, i mean the US does boast of free speech but when the chips are down ppl can't get angry and move the hell on. The man said something stupid, we all do, if everyone had to resign for saying something racial, a lot of us would be out of a job. LOL many of these ppl calling for his resignation have said their fair share of crap and they didn't have to resign, they were racked over the coals and asked for forgiveness and that was the end of the story, now they call for this man to step down, give me a dmn break.
If the basket ball team is so offended then why the heck are they not saying something and if they are it should be well we don't give a flying f&&& about Mr. Imus if he can come and do what we do daily then he can spout his crap.
The man is an idiot i will not dispute that but he has apologised and that should do, so every one that says soemthing racially charged should have to resign, then i guess that whole free speech thing th

Imus in the Morning is not going anywhere. Why are you so worried about what he said anyway? How does what he said effect you? I believe in free speech. When that is taken away we are in trouble. Being politically correct is bringing this country down. People like you will surely be the downfall of the USA. To be quite honest that basketball team indeed looked like a bunch of nappy headed hos. It is not Imus' fault that white girls do not want to play basketball. He simply calls them as he sees them. Long live Don Imus. He and his wife are involved in many charitable organizations. The positive things which he has done outweigh any statement made on the air. Leave this man alone and pick on one of those idiots on the FOX News network.

Imus is an idiot...just when folks thought that Howard Stern was the worst, he dared prove them wrong.

  • Lindsey Russell4/8/2007

I agree. Imus needs to go. MSNBC needs to wake up.
