Disney Apples to Apples: A Consumer Review

This is a consumer review of the Disney Apples to Apples game, manufactured by Mattel. This game is designed along the same lines as the other Apples to Apples games, and is intended for ages 7 and up. Disney Apples to Apples can accommodate 4-8 players, and is available at most large retailers where toys are sold, as well as online.

The Disney Apples to Apples game contains 270 Red Apple Cards (verbs & nouns), 90 Green Apple Cards (Adjectives), and a green plastic card holder with the Apples to Apples logo on it. Instructions are included, although anyone already familiar with the other versions of Apples to Apples likely will know how to play without instructions.

Price
The price for the Disney version of Apples to Apples varies from retailer to retailer. Toys 'R' Us carries it for $20, Target sells it for $22, and Amazon has it for $23. Personally, I feel the price is inappropriate. It should really be priced similarly to other card games, like Uno.

Ease of Play
Disney Apples to Apples is not complicated. Upon each round, a different player is the "Judge". The Judge picks a Green Apple Card, which is an adjective. The word is read aloud, and the card is placed face up on the table. The remaining players choose from their hand of Red Apple Cards (verbs & nouns), selecting that which they feel most closely corresponds to the adjective on the active Green Apple Card. The box states that the game is intended for anyone aged 7 and up, but my newly-turned 6 year old, who can read, played it without assistance.

Opinion
Being that I actually worked at Mattel several years ago, I am loathe to say anything negative about their products. But honestly, this game sucks. It is so boring! The other versions of Apples to Apples are favorites in our family, and we find them to be a lot of fun. Usually, our whole family is laughing non-stop through the entire game, because it is so easy to create humorous combinations with the cards in the original and Junior versions of Apples to Apples. But not so with Disney Apples to Apples. What a disappointment! It was impossible to get the same entertainment experience with this version as we do with the others. Generally, we play Apples to Apples for about an hour. After 20 minutes of Disney Apples to Apples, we were all bored stiff. What are the people in the Games group at Mattel thinking? Just slap the Disney name on it and then sell loyal customers junk? Because that's exactly the impression I got with the Disney Apples to Apples game.

Recommendation
Again, I'm very reluctant to bash Mattel's products, because I have been purchasing them myself for many years and have rarely found anything to complain about. But I would not recommend that anyone waste their money purchasing the Disney Apples to Apples game. Stick with the original, or Junior version of the game, as they are much more fun. This game was a complete disappointment. I would actually return it if I thought I could get refund, as our family will likely never open the box again.
