Disney Recipes: Bring the Magic Home by Cooking Your Own Tonga Toast and Other Treats

Loved your vacation at Disney? Now, 2 months later, you have this urge for Tonga Toast, but you dont want to fly down to Florida, just to get the Tonga Toast. A good quick fix would be to make it right there in your own kitchen. Wait how do you make, you might be asking, well one thing you may have not realized is if you like what you eat in Disney, did you know you can get the recipe? that is right, just ask your waitress and they will give you the recipe. I am going to share with you a few the more popular dishes from Disney, like Tonga Toast that I have, How I got these recipes was by asking the waitress for them. So now lets start with Tonga Toast.:

Disney Recipe No. 1: Tonga Toast

Ingredients:

2 or 4 slices sourdough bread, cut 1 to 1 1/2 inches thick
1 banana
1/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 egg
1/4 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
oil or shortening for frying
whipped butter and/or syrup

Method:

Cut a 1-inch pocket in one side of each bread slice. Cut banana in half crosswise, then split each piece lengthwise. Remove peel and stuff two pieces of fruit in each pocket of bread; set aside. Mix sugar and cinnamon; set aside. Mix together well the egg, milk and vanilla.

Heat about 4 inches of oil in a pan to 350º F. Dip stuffed bread into egg/milk mixture and let it soak a few seconds to let penetrate bread. Fry bread on both sides in hot oil until lightly browned, about 3 minutes. Drain on paper towels or wire rack. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and serve

Another favorite is Frunch juice at Animal Kingdom this is a great breakfast drink:

Disney Recipe No. 2: Frunch Juice

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups mango juice
1/2 cup pineapple concentrate, thawed
1/2 cup lemonade concentrate, thawed
2 cups fresh orange juice
3 cups water
4 Tablespoons grenadine

Method:

Mix all ingredients together. Serve over ice in a tall glass. Serves 8

A great Kid food is the peanutbutter Playdough

Disney Recipe No. 3: Peanutbutter Playdough

Ingredients:

1 cup peanut butter
1 cup white corn syrup
1 cup powdered sugar
3 cups powdered milk

Method:

In a large bowl, mix peanut butter, corn syrup, and powdered sugar together. Add powdered milk and knead until smooth. (Add more powdered milk if needed.)

One favorite is the Cheddar Cheese soup In Epcot Canadian Pavillion
Yield: 6 servings

Disney Recipe No. 4: Cheddar Cheese Soup

Ingredients:

1/4 lb. smoked bacon finely chopped
1 medium red onion cut into 1/4 in. pieces
1/2 cup finely sliced celery
1/2 cup finely chopped carrots
3 TB all-purpose flour
3 cups whole milk
2 cups chicken stock
12 oz. grated white cheddar, Canadian Black Diamond
3 dashes Tabasco
1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1/2 cup Moosehead Canadian Ale, room temperature
salt and pepper to taste
1 TB thinly sliced chives

Method:

1. Cook the bacon in a large heavy-bottomed, non-reactive soup pot over medium heat until wilted but not browned.

2. Add onions, celery and carrots and cook until the onion is translucent and bacon has crisped.

3. Sprinkle in flour and stir constantly for 2 minutes. Stir in milk and stock, a little at a time, blending well to ensure there are no lumps. Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer for 15 minutes.

4. Remove from heat and whisk in cheese, Tabasco, Worcestershire and ale. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Serve with your favorite bread and top with chopped chives

At the Magic Kingdom they have at Liberty Tree a pot roast that is very good:

Disney Recipe No. 5: Liberty Tree Pot Roast

Yield: 6 portions

Ingredients

4 oz. butter
1/2 oz. garlic
1/2 lb. carrots
3/4 lb. onions
1/2 oz. fresh thyme
3 lbs. shoulder beef
4 oz. flour
6 TB beef base
1/2 lb. celery
2 diced tomatoes
1 cup burgundy wine

Method

Sear meat in stockpot in butter.

Add flour and wine, beef base and tomatoes. Dice carrots, celery, onion and add fresh thyme.

Simmer for 40 minutes to an hour, or until desired doneness.

Once cooked, remove meat and let cool before slicing.

Pour gravy through sieve to remove all the vegetables, saving gravy to use with meat.

Once meat has cooled, slice and place in a pan. Add gravy, wrap pan and reheat in oven to 165 degrees.

At MGM they got a grapefruit cake that is to die for:

Disney Recipe No. 6: MGM Grapefruit Cake

Yield: 4 to 6 portions

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups sifted cake flour
3/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup vegetable oil
3 eggs (separated)
3 tablespoons grapefruit juice
1/2 teaspoon grated lemon rind
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar

Method:

1. Preheat oven to 350º F. Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt into mixing bowl. Make a well in center of dry ingredients.

2. Add water, oil, egg yolks, grapefruit juice, and lemon rind. Beat until smooth.

3. Beat egg whites and cream of tartar separately, until whites are stiff but not dry.

4. Gradually fold egg whites into the cake batter, folding gently with a rubber spatula until just blended. Do not stir the mixture.

5. Pour into an ungreased 10-inch cake pan. Bake at 350º degrees for 25 to 30 minutes, or until cake springs back when lightly touched with a finger. Invert pan on cake rack until cool. Run spatula around edge of cake. Carefully remove from pan. With a serrated knife, gently cut layer in half.

Grapefruite Cream Cheese Frosting

Ingredients:

2 six-ounce packages of cream cheese
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon grated lemon rind
3/4 cup powdered sugar (sifted)
6 to 8 drops yellow food coloring
1 one-pound can grapefruit sections (well-drained), reserving 2 tablespoons of juice OR 3 fresh grapefruits, peeled, sectioned, and drained, reserving 2 tablespoons of juice.

Method:

1. Let cream cheese soften at room temperature. Beat cheese until fluffy.

2. Add lemon juice and rind.

3. Gradually blend in sugar. Beat until well blended. Add food coloring.

4. Add reserved grapefruit and blend into frosting.

5. Divide the frosting evenly into two bowls. Roughly chop 2/3 of the grapefruit sections and add them to half the frosting. Spread this mixture on the bottom half of cake. Top with several grapefruit sections. Cover with second layer of cake. Frost top and sides. Garnish with remaining grapefruit sections

My favorite to make from Disney that I always get a compliement on has to be the Strawberry-Banana bread from Wilderness Lodge

Disney Recipe No. 7: Strawberry-Banana Bread

Makes 2 Loaves.

1 cup butter, softened
2 cups granulated sugar
2 cups ripe bananas (about 6 medium size), mashed
4 eggs
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
3 cups flour
1 1/2 pounds frozen sliced strawberries, thawed

Grease two 9- by 5-inch loaf pans. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar. Incorporate the bananas and scrape the sides of the bowl with the spatula. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing thoroughly after each one. Set aside.

In another bowl, mix tgether the salt, baking soda, and flour. Add the flour mixture to the butter mixture and stir until fully incorporated. Add the strawberries. Pour into prepared pansd and bake for 60 to 75 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool completely on a rack before inverting onto a plate.

There are many many others, in fact in my own collection I have well over 100 recipes from the years I have gone down to Disney. So next time your there or if your palnning atrip to Disney, If you like what you eat ask for the recipe.
