Behind the Magic at the Happiest Place on Earth

Have you ever wondered how Walt Disney World is as magical as it is? Have you ever thought to yourself, "How do they do that?" Well, now you can find out in person how all those mystical and magical moments were created by taking a backstage tour. There are several tours to choose from and many of them are very affordable. If you are looking for a great place to take your family on vacation but are watching your money the tours Disney World offers are a fantastic way to create life long memories you and your kids will never forget.

Around the World at Epcot: This is an outdoor tour, so you will want to check weather reports and dress appropriately. According to Disney, with this package you can be a part of the personal transportation revolution in which you get to go for a two hour tour of the World Showcase Lagoon on the Segway Human Transporter. Included in this event are riding lessons and an outdoor adventure around the World Showcase. You can partake in this wonderful tour at either 8:30 AM or 9:30 AM all week long. All participants must be at least 16 and weigh less than 250 pounds. Parental consent is necessary for minors. Price of this tour is $80 plus park admission.

Backstage Magic: What an awesome opportunity. On this tour you get a sneak peek at the secrets behind the technical operations, artistic endeavors and scientific explorations that go into making of Disney's magnificent special effects. This is a 7 hour tour that takes you through the tunnels beneath the Magic Kingdom and backstage at Epcot and MGM Studios. Things start with a behind the scenes tour of Epcot, journeys through several other areas of the park and ends at the MGM Studios Park. Beware though; this is not a cheap affair. The cost is $199 per person but does includes lunch at Mama Melrose's Ristorante Italiano resteraunt. The age requirement to take part of this is 16 and a photo ID is necessary to gain access.

DiveQuest: This would be the tour take, in my opinion. Disney provides you with the equipment, you provide proof of a current scuba "open-water" adult dive certificate and they take you into the waters of a six million gallon aquarium where you can see 8,000 different specimens of sea life. We are talking about a tank big enough to fit Spaceship Earth inside it. It's one of the largest attractions of it's kind and include a 2 1/2-hour tour that begins with a multimedia presentation and ends with a trip to an underwater oceanographic research facility. For the little tykes 8 and older, there is the option to don a wet suit and swim the surface of the Living Sea aquarium. If you have the certification necessary you also get to enjoy 40 minutes of scuba diving. No park admission required and the cost of rings in at $140 per person. Tours are available all week from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. A parent or guardian must dive with those 10-14.

Keys to the Kingdom: This tour is geared towards the kids but is enjoyable regardless of your age. It takes you through access tunnels that stretch 1.5 miles beneath the Magic Kingdom Park. Here you can learn how Tinkerbell really flies along with some of the other great secrets Disney keeps. Backstage stops include various attractions that inform you about the history of the Park and Walt Disney himself. Throughout the tour you will discover some of the fantastic accomplishments of the man and hear about the vision he made come true. Tours are available all week and last 4 1/2-hours. Cameras are not allowed on this tour and the price of admission is $60 per person which includes lunch.

The Magic behind Our Steam Trains: This tour starts before the park is open for the day. You will get to join Disney's railroad engineers as they prepare to start the trains for the day. You get to see where the trains are kept and learn about Walt Disney's infatuations for trains. Apparently he loved them so much he built a train you could ride in his own backyard. This tour also explains how the trains were built and what goes into keeping them running. Price of admission for this three hour tour amounts to $40 plus price of park admission and is available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Participants must be at least 10 years of age to attend.

Sounds neat, but it kills me how expensive Disney is.

The tours sound cool, but wouldn't it kill some of the magic for children?
