Nature Film Documents Life of Flamingos in Lake Natron, Northern Tanzania

There's something magical about flamingos and Disneynature: The Crimson Wing - Mystery of the Flamingos (www.disneybluray.com) explores the life of these lanky yet graceful pink birds in a nature documentary out on Blu-ray and DVD Oct. 19, 2010.

Overview of Disneynature: The Crimson Wing - Mystery of the Flamingos
Don't expect to hear Elton John belting out "Circle of Life" or the other The Lion King cheery favorite "Hakuna Matata" playing in the background. Instead, become engaged with the squawking of flamingos and sound of wings flapping as a narrator tells the intriguing story while mystical, and sometimes groovy, music plays in the background. Crimson Wing is a delightful, family-friendly nature documentary filmed in Lake Natron in Northern Tanzania tracing the birth, life and death of flamingos over a course of 78 minutes.

Lake Natron is home to a million crimson-winged flamingos and Crimson Wing cinematography captured the stunning landscape. Colors are vibrant and many scenes of flamingos and unexpected guests (predators) had me wondering, how did they film that? Timing is everything and filmmakers captured never-before filmed and powerful moments such as flamingo chicks waddling over salt flats and attack of a hyena.

My Reaction to Disneynature: The Crimson Wing - Mystery of the Flamingos
Flamingos hold a special place in my heart. Not only because they are immortalized as the unofficial lawn ornament of the United States, but because I lived in a small town called Flamingo while living and working in Everglades National Park. I never saw a flamingo in the park but still believe their existence. I admit to not knowing much about the bird other than their pink color is due to their diet. It was an easy reply when representatives sent me a copy to review Disneynature: The Crimson Wing - Mystery of the Flamingos. Um, yes please.

Scenes with the flamingo chicks had me cooing and smiling while watching the cute and fuzzy little birds feeding and interacting with other flamingos. Being a nature documentary encompassing life and death, I admit to shedding a tear when the life of some chicks was cut too short.

Those, like me, who grew up watching Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom will appreciate how Disneynature has taken nature documentaries to a new level. The Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingos is a film every one of all ages will appreciate. Parents will want to share with children and children will enjoy over and over again.
