Disney's "Dive In" Blunder

Well, Disney has outdone itself once again. Recently promoting the movie High School Musical, Disney created young girls underwear with the words "Dive In" written on the front of them. A woman in Kent bought them for her seven year old granddaughter, and she is calling for a total recall of the packages. The outrage over these has even drawn the attention of a British children's charity, The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.

Sue Ralph, the grandmother in question stated: "You just never know who could see that and think it was a bit too enticing for a young child to be wearing." The store that sold the underwear, ASDA stated that it was "Disney Approved".

That comment there alone says enough for me. It's a bit hypocritical to say Disney's underwear is a offensive to children, when you are then talking about people seeing the seven year old's underwear. Who is going to be looking I would like to know. Granted, the whole idea of words written on a child's clothing is bothersome to me, I do not allow any words on my daughter's rear end. But as for her underwear, no one is looking there but her anyways, at least, they better not be.

The words "Dive In" refer to one of the major songs on the movie High School Musical Three. So there is a tie-in, and it does make sense. The promoting of Disney movies is everywhere on any article of clothing for children, and it always has been. Perhaps this grandmother has her mind a little too far into the gutter, or perhaps she was looking for a quick way to make a buck. Either way, I see more clothing that is offensive for little girls than this every day. Where is the outrage over the rest of the provocative clothing lines?

I decided to shop around on the Internet and see what other clothing offenders I could find, and I have to say, even I was shocked.

I could walk into Limited Too and buy my eleven year old daughter a micro-padded bra.
Then head over to JcPenny and buy her a red thong.
A stop in at the Baby Gap for a shirt that reads "Nuts for you".
And finally a stop in at any store for sweatpants that read "Hottie".

Now, a shopping trip is so hard for young girls, yet harder on us parents. The things they sell in girls departments is appalling, yet we do have a choice here. Instead of screaming about what you just bought, next time, try checking out what you are buying.

There is an easier way to stop clothing companies from making and selling offensive clothing for young girls, then to make a national issue of it. Just don't buy them. Period.

In the meantime, I have to finish school shopping. My daughter now wants a pair of those underwear, and as I am a good parent, I can rest easy that no one else will be checking her undies for words, and I will do my best to avoid the "Too Hot To Handle" pants.
