Disney's World of Theme Parks

The Walt Disney Company has five Disney-themed resorts that encompass 11 parks scattered across three continents. The two original parks are located in the United States, with two others in Asia and a fifth in Paris. The oldest Disney resort opened in 1955, and after earning approval from the Chinese government in 2009, plans were under way in 2010 to open a sixth park in Shanghai, China, as early as 2014.

Disneyland Resort

Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, contains the company's original theme park, Disneyland, which is home to some of the world's most popular thrill rides, including the Matterhorn Bobsleds, Pirates of the Caribbean, It's a Small World and Splash Mountain. The resort also includes Disney's California Adventure Park, which features a variety of California-themed areas and rides, including the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Soarin' Over California and the giant rollercoaster, California Screamin'.

Walt Disney World Resort

Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, covers 40 square miles, with less than 35 percent of the land developed and 25 percent of it designated as a wilderness preserve. The resort includes four theme parks-Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom-as well as two water parks and a wide range of onsite hotels, shops and restaurants at the Downtown Disney Area and Disney's Boardwalk.

Hong Kong Disneyland Resort

Hong Kong Disneyland Resort opened in 2005 on Lantau Island, and at 100 acres, it is the company's smallest resort. The theme park itself is broken into four sections found in the original Disneyland park-Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Adventureland and Main Street, U.S.A.-and the resort also includes two Disney-themed hotels, Disney shops and restaurants.

Disneyland Resort Paris

Disneyland Resort Paris, formerly known as Euro Disney, covers two theme parks, a golf course, seven Disney-themed hotels and Disney Village, which includes shops, restaurants and live entertainment. Disneyland Park is made up of Discoveryland, Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland and Main Street, U.S.A. Among the park's popular rides are It's a Small World, Space Mountain: Mission 2 and Pirates of the Caribbean. Walt Disney Studios Park features four studio lots with rides, shows and behind-the-scenes looks at Disney movie and television.

Tokyo Disney Resort

Tokyo Disney Resort includes two theme parks, six hotels, a Cirque du Soleil theater and Ikspiari, a large complex with 140 shops and restaurants and a 16-screen cinema. Tokyo Disneyland has many of the traditional lands found in other Disney parks-Critter Country, Fantasyland, Toontown, Adventureland and Tomorrowland-but Main Street, U.S.A. is replaced by World Bazaar, and the park's seventh section is called Westernland. Tokyo DisneySea is a water-themed park with rides and shows scattered across seven "ports," including American Waterfront and Mermaid Lagoon.
