Displaying Items at Tag Sales to Make the Most Sales

Holding a Tag Sale -- Here Are Some Tips for You!

Are you holding a tag sale? One of the best ways to increase sales at your tag sale is to display items creatively and attractively. While you don't have to consider the idea of opening up your own retail store - it sure doesn't hurt to think like one for the weekend. Here are some tips for you:

Clothing. When displaying clothing, always go that extra mile and clean any clothing that you plan to sell. The better any item looks, the better your chances of it selling, and selling for a higher price than you would certainly get for it if it were dirty. Also do minor repairs on items that make sense. If a blazer is missing a button - sew one on! Leave lengthy repairs to any seller, things like alterations - any buyer would need to make for themselves. Display clothing ideally on hanging rack on hangers. You can always neatly fold clothing and display it on a clean sheet on your lawn. Put smaller clothing items in sealable baggies to keep things from floating all over the lawn.

Toys. Children's toys are probably one of the most popular items at any tag sale. Wipe off any dirt or grime with a moistened paper towel, that should get most plastic toys clean. Put any pieces of toys - like games - in small plastic baggies and then rubber band them to the original toys so that people know they come with their original parts. Display children's toys all together. You don't have to separate toys according to age group, keep in mind that toys you might think would be good for one age group, another mom might think would be better for an older or younger child. Parents and children will be likely to shop heavily in this section.

Books. Sometimes books can be big sellers at tag sales. What does not sell is exactly what you would think would not sell: musty, old, tattered books with torn covers by authors no one knows about subjects that don't interest people. So if books are not in good condition, or if they aren't on popular subjects, place them in the recyclable pile instead of out at your tag sale. Good sellers are paperbacks, bestsellers of any types and popular non-fiction of recent years. Display books together and the best thing to do is to price all books at the same price (i.e. - all books are fifty cents). Place books in boxes or milk crates for easy organization. If you have a lot of books, like more than forty, consider sorting them by subject, because many people that like one subject will be tempted to buy more books on the same subject and it could be worth the extra sale you make.

Exercise equipment. Many people will be happy to see free weights and exercise videos for sale. Don't worry about putting out VHS tapes instead of DVDs, many people still use VHS tapes. Make sure that exercise equipment has any instructions, if possible. Remember to clean off equipment as well as you can and describe any defects. Put all exercise items together.

Baby/Toddler Items. Lots of people going to tag sales look for these items. If you can display them near the toys, you will probably get a lot of customers shopping in both areas. If you have any maternity clothes for sale, consider putting a sign up in the baby/toddler section that maternity clothing is available. Put baby and toddler clothing in plastic bags that seal and mark them with the sizes on the outside. Moms will open the baggies to check to be sure clothing has no stains, no holes and then will pop them back in the baggies to purchase. You can display these items in a large basket (or a crib if you have one for sale) or a large box.
