Distractions

Christopher
addicted to all of these screens
its like a shot of heroin through my veins
Times Square used to mean something
advertisements and messages conveyed on the side of a building

but now I have a bunch of screens of my own
I don't need Times Square
the old cathode ray tube television with the "digital" analog tuner
the digital to analog converter box that is required
because analog is no longer supported

an LCD monitor with an analog input
a 32 inch HDTV with an HDMI input going to a BluRay player
a netbook and a 7 inch tablet

what am I doing with all of this technology
it all requires me to purchase something else
it always requires me to learn something new

too many choices

should I watch YouTube, or Netflix, or BluRay, or DVD, or television over the air
should I use Android, or Linux, or Windows
I wonder what videotape looks like on HDTV
I wonder what high-resolution video looks like on the tablet
is 720 lines of resolution enough?

can I live with all of these distractions
I want to watch everything
I do not want to read anything
can I get through a few minutes without putting something else in
can I go a few seconds without clicking on anything
maybe I should reprogram the channels again
should I download this or just watch it over the Internet?
I might want to watch it later offline

gone are the days when you stockpiled videotapes or DVDs to the ceiling
gone are the days when you kept terabytes worth of video on your hard drive
none of it seems worth keeping
all of it acquired for cheap, no sentimental value, no relationship with these images
just meaningless video playing back on a screen
makes one wonder just how meaningful their lives are
and if these images are just life support, to prop up a meaningless existence ...
