Distractions Are Killing Our Craft

B.L. Boitson

My Roku is killing my craft. 4 weeks ago this past Monday I had surgery. The weeks leading up to, and following, the surgery were spent laying on various couches and beds trying not to piss off my back anymore than I already had. I went through several series. First, it was "Lost", but after entering the third season, I realized it was much more than I could handle (OK OK, it was the spinal surgery episode that REALLY put me over the edge). Then I went onto more happier shows like "Drop Dead Diva" and "Parks & Recreation" and then back to the dark side with "Nip/Tuck". You see, my Roku is killing my craft.

Have I derived any inspiration from the countless hours I have spent watching other people's craft? Besides some fascinating nightmares and a little eye candy, not really. If I am at home, sitting in my recliner, or laying on my couch, the Roku is going to be on. I have a 3 room apartment so escaping to another part of the house isn't really an option unless I want to blog from my toilet. Just an idea really, I swear I've never done it. Yet.

This past Sunday I kicked myself out of my apartment and into nature to enjoy a non-rainy day (rare these days in Pennsylvania). I wrote 4,000 words in my memoir Sunday alone.

Every week it seems that one of us in the WSMG co-op are escaping our normal settings to be inspired outside of our boxes. We are way too distracted by the luxuries that internet connection provide. It seems when we are somewhere new, where we cannot be distracted by dishes, kids, meals, paying bills or cuties on "Parks & Rec", we can accomplish significantly more in our craft.

If you, like me, are an overly distracted person, step outside. Sit in your car. Go to the coffee shop. Visit a friends' front porch. Work your craft without multitasking and see just how much you accomplish.

Where do you escape to spend time on your craft? If you don't escape, tell me how you accomplish anything at home!
