District 9 Sci-fi Film Makes You Wonder How Earthlings Would Treat Aliens?

Phillip W. Chambley
This truly remarkable modern day sci-fi film and sad racial story makes you wonder? "What would really happen if aliens did decide to come to visit our planet earth?" First-time feature filmmaker Neill Blomkamp and also screen-play author seems to think they will be treated badly? Especially, if they came to our beautiful planet "sick and in need of our help". In a peaceful manner.

These alien creatures look like 7 foot tall roach bugs! Also known as "Prawns!" similar to the King Cricket insect found in South Africa, here on planet earth. Where this incredible young 30 year old filmmaker/director/writer Blomkamp is ironically originally from Johannesburg in South Africa and also the "nasty and dirty location of where these millions of strange and helpless" alien creatures had unfortunately landed on earth? (the filth and garbage reminds you of the Slumdog Millionaire movie).

Why they chose to land and hover approx. 30 miles above our planet at this particular location defying gravity somehow? No one seems to know? You can clearly see their beautiful elaborate space-ship in the sky above, similar to the film called "Independence Day". After residents of this small town location of Chiawelo-Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa awaited for three months, just to see what their intentions were?

Local scientist and government authorities finally decided to invade and enter this gigantic round ET well constructed craft too actually find out what was inside. To their dismay? Experts found over 1 million horrifying dying creatures inside this gray vessel. These tall and skinny insect looking creatures where sick with some kind of virus and the smell of jelly-like fluids on the walls and floors would just about "knock you down!" from a human-beings point of view.

The main objective of this film and unforgettable loving story is? "What is the TRUE meaning of an alien?" Whether or not they come from another country or even another planet? What do they look like? And how are living and breathing creatures honestly treated on this planet we call earth? How can we learn to love these non-violent individual intelligent creatures that are different from us?

These 1.8 millions of alien "weird looking" creatures were eventually taking to a so-called fenced-in "concentration camp" down below on earth and left to tend for themselves without any help from outsiders, including the government. Apparently? They had "NO fight left in them because they were so sick with an unknown incurable disease!" Which the film never explained?

After twenty or so odd years? The local residents and even the local government decided it was time to move and evict these intelligent, but sick, "nasty creatures" into what they called a better environment 200 meters away into small tents. Naturally? Some prawns were defensive and tried to fight these government officials during this legal procedure, where they had lived for so many years showing some problems of violence and harmful diseases to outsiders as claimed by some residents shown on the national cable news programs format?

These living and breathing creations of apparently "God's creation in life" somehow landed on our loving planet we call earth for help? Claiming that their superiors/leaders had died in the space travel process, years ago. The film actually depicts these aliens as being caring pacifist and or meaning that they have NO intentions of any kind of violence in their daily lifestyles or nature to harm anyone, including their very own. (after-all highly intelligence is not based on violent behavior as stated by professional scientist).

This sci-fi thriller film simply called District 9 (nominated for four 2010 academy awards, but did not win) is mostly based around the extremely nervous character field operative "Geek" Wikus Vand de Merwe (Sharlto Copely) MNU or "Multi-National United" alien corporation whom originally starts out the eviction process for the Prawns. Unfortunately, accidentally encounters hand and facial touching of a black virus that could cause him to eventually and or possibly evolve into an alien Prawn. "Maybe?" (film viewers are not really sure what will happen in the end at this point).

Non-Violent Wikus is shown at the very beginning of the film continuously "big mouth" talking in his office to news cameras about the Prawns, in a documentary-style portrait Australian or New Zealand accent, although he was un-shaven and looked really "dirty and nasty" to begin with in the film? (The filmmakers should have shown him as being a clean-shaven and remarkably well-dressed corporate loving family man with an executive appearance, whom was always concerned about his loving wife).

Leading up to his violent and even sometimes comical "Rambo" performance until the end of the film, getting shot at least one hundred times over and over by MNU officials and other local villains trying to recover his body because of his alien mixed virus, that was worth millions of dollars on the modern day market. However, he was never mortally wounded for "some odd reason?

The "strangest part of this entire film was?" Is how the screen-play writers used the vulgar/profanity word "FU..?" (a sexual meaning) over and over again throughout the actors verbal dialog, especially Wikus, possibly at least over a hundred times? ("Believe it or NOT?" there are other meaningful/colourful profanity words that are used in films too simply describe a characters frustration, stress, violence, and out of the ordinary daily life-style which Bruce Willis always used in the saga films called "Die Hard". Willis at least used DIFFERENT words of profanity describing his anger, unlike this film's use of this (1) one vulgar word over and over again for some strange reason?)

This extraordinary film is camera shot in a small cam-corder visual and also a large wide-screen cinematic effect together at times to give film viewers a historical CNN documentary portrayal of what is "actually happening here on planet earth at this time and history in this fictional documentary news?" Even showing the little screen news at the bottom in this horizontal view during the first 45 minutes of viewing.

This low-budget film called "District 9" of $30 million dollars cost opened in it's first weekend summer of August 14, 2009 making 37 million dollars! Ironically? the unusual and sometimes hateful film critics gave it a high rating of A-. Stating this was an original film/story NOT copied anywhere in the history of Hollywood filming. "Neill Blomkay could possibly be the next NEW Steven Spielberg!" because he seems to have a new idea of filming.

Director and even "nice guy" Neill Blomkay also stated during his DVD interview that this was his first feature film? He was asked what would you do if you had to make this film all over again? He surprisingly stated: "Possibly start all over again from scratch!" Because the film had too many mistakes?" Apparently? He thought the film did not meet up to his standards of perfection?

I personally disagree? Because of the simple fact? The majority of times entertainment is based on "Fast Instinct" from actors and directors for the very first time of filming. Meaning? "How will the average person look at this particular film scene showing actual human-beings in life? How will film viewers react in the big screen theater?" This fact is also based on the "Eyeball of the film director at the present time!" and what this person actually sees to make it a great viewing pleasure for anyone in the future!

Yahoo.com users and or weekly theater film viewers gave this film a high rating of a B+. Over-all stating their sympathy about how living/breathing creatures are abused and treated so badly all around the world and or possibly the universe? "No matter what they look like in human or alien life!" You will love this movie if you can withstand this horrible red bloody war of humans versus aliens, and the stupid illogical profanity of the (1) one word FU..? Ironically used in almost every other sentence during the film?

This modern day science fiction thriller film called District 9 does have a lot of mistakes if you examine closely during viewing? However? The film direction and unusual weird story will keep you "on the edge of your seat" at all times. The film editing is excellent! The way it travels from one scene to another, often-times using the "shaky on-screen film process" which is not that bad, because it was used properly during the violent scenes.

The computer visual effects (FX) are absolutely amazing in this movie? Regarding the way they mixed the Prawn alien creatures into the human-being effects. The Prawn called Christopher and his small child-like son was a "heartwarming" scene because of the computer animated inter-action between physical living human characters Wickus and themselves. "Showing another worldly alien bonding with another human-being here on earth?"

At times? This film does remind you of the historical sci-fi 1985 movie called "Enemy Mine" starring Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr. where a human-being and a "truly ugly" alien have developed a unique spiritual and loving/caring relationship amongst one another to become friends in their daily life's on this stranded planet, helping each other, because of universal life survival? The same as Wickus and Christopher in this film called District 9.

Although? District 9 later on showed some really cheesy special FX effects, similar to the "Robo-Cop movie sagas" As director and filmmaker Neill Blomkay stated there were mistakes in the film? This was probably one of the greatest problems? possibly because of financial reasons? Unlike, filmmaker James Cameron's blockbuster 2009 hit "Avatar" of modern day special effects, whom had the greatest amount of monetary funding to begin in this film. Director Blomkay had no choice but to unfortunately assume the lesser of professional filming however doing an excellent job in return.

This "gross and bloody, but ironically heartwarming sci-fi tale of weird looking creatures" called District 9 will most likely become a historical library film throughout the centuries too come, because of it's plot. This movie has recently been released on DVD, cable and Direct TV here in the year of 2010 on our planet we call earth. "View it and express your own opinion!" I personally give it a B+ rating, especially if you are science fiction movie freak like me!
