Ditch Your Bed!

Annie Jean Brewer
We spend only 1/3 of our lives sleeping. For that 8 hours of our life, we tend to create a whole room just for this one purpose. A bed is one of the largest pieces of furniture in the modern home and can easily be the most expensive as well.

By ditching the bed we could potentially eliminate 100 square feet or more of living space, reduce the furniture budget and save money by having that much less space to heat, cool and maintain.

Some, like Peter Lawrence, advocate using a sleeping bag instead of a mattress, box spring and bed frame. Some encourage you to take a so-called "college student approach" with a couch-type frame like this.

I suggest taking a page from the Japanese and trying an authentic futon. The benefits of an authentic futon are:

smaller size
lighter weight
increased durability

To sleep on a futon all one needs to do is place the futon on the floor, cover it with your sheet set (if desired) and go to sleep. In the morning you fold up the futon and place it on a shelf or in a closet. Larger futons can be folded up and used as a low couch if desired.

By sleeping on the floor you eliminate the issues caused by too-soft or sagging mattresses. You also eliminate any danger of injury if you get pushed out of bed. You are additionally able to free up valuable floor space when you are not actually sleeping to use for other things.

Futons, being lighter and more portable than a traditional mattress, can be easily carried outside and aired in the sunshine. This will enable you to shake or beat the mattress on occasion to remove any dust and debris that accumulates on it. If something is accidentally spilled, the futon can be sprayed off and hung in a breeze until dry--a far cry from the limited cleaning options available on a mattress!

When considering your bedding options give futons some serious consideration before passing them on. These simple beds have not been in use for thousands of years without reason, and may give your living space, your back and your budget significant relief.

Just a few things dear. I have scoliosis and would not recomend this to anyone with this type of back issue. I slept on a futon on the floor and was torture to get up and go to the restroom at night or in the morning. Many times I was in pain when I woke. This is a great idea if your back is in decent or even semi-decent shape. Be careful when you consider this please.
