Kathleen Dougherty
Many Houston residents go to beaches around the Houston area or travel to the many lakes around Houston and throughout Texas for a weekend jaunt. Others take occasional vacations to places around the world where there may be water ways. One of the most fun past times when around the water is to go scuba diving. However, in order to do so safely, unsupervised and in order to be able to rent equipment at your destination you need to be open water certified in diving. This is a fun and relatively easy process but it does take some instruction. There are several dive schools in Houston where you can get your Dive/Scuba certification. Before attending class most people will want to purchase their own personal Scuba gear such as mask, snorkel and fins. You will need to be over 10 years old and in good health.

Houston Scuba Academy has a variety of lessons available for the novice diver who wants to get their certification. They have an introductory class available for those who are unsure if diving is for them. After the initial class then people can determine if they want to continue with training. Private classes are available for those who need one on one attention or whose schedule does not match the other classes. This includes three pool and one classroom three hour session plus a home study DVD. Weekend classes are available two Saturdays all day long plus the take home DVD. Weeknight class takes place three weeknights per week for three weeks plus the take home DVD. Class and pool instruction is split between the classes. Students are eligible for certification after one weekend for the open water class. Weekday and weekend classes are $275. Please call (713) 721-7788 for private lesson rates. Houston Scuba Academy is located at 12505 Hillcroft.

Sea Sports Scuba has several locations throughout Houston so you can conveniently take dive lessons. Classes consist of two weekends. The first weekend starts on Friday and ends on Sunday and will cover pool and classroom study. Another weekend is then needed to conduct the open water class.
