Diverted Plane Lands in Bangor Maine- Flight #273 from Paris Instead of Atlanta Goes to Maine
Disruptive Passenger in Custody of Federal Air Marshall on Plane - Airbus 330
WLBZ shared pictures at Bangor Airport as Flight #273 was coming into the airport with CNN.
Detha Sastry interviewed by Rick Sanchez on CNN was asked, "What happened on the plane?"
Detha said, "We were told that there was a danger and some threats made but beyond that the passengers were not told." Once the incident broke out, it prompted the flight attendants to segregate the passengers and they did a good job keeping control while we knew there was chaos on the back.
The young man that was apprehended was holding a back pack and was between 20 and 30 years old, and looked like Mediterrean origin.
Sandy Zusmann, another passenger said, "About 2.5 hours ago (around12 - 12:30 EST) while the plane was over the Atlantic, the stewardesses had passengers move up to the front area, and they segregated the unruly passenger. He said all they were told was that there was a security threat. "I was sitting in row 29 and I was towards the back. Some 15 passengers were moved to the front section of the coach section."
"Was it a bomb scare or bomb threat?" Rick asked him.
Well they took one gentleman off the plane, who had a Mediterranean background. He had dark hair, dark complexion, and was well dressed well.
The flight crew came on around 12 - 12:30 Eastern time and asked passengers to put on their seat belts because of the turbulence that they were about to experience, but there was never any turbulence.
The passengers were asked to return their blankets and pillows and then the crew took the detachable floating cushions they used those to build a barricade around the passenger.
He said, "We didn't hear any unruly passenger, whatever threats he made, there was no screaming. The crew was great; no reason to panic and the individual didn't have the proper identification. No personal carry ons were allowed to be removed from the plane and our relatives our filling us in on what they say on TV."
Sandy Zusmann said, "It gave us more comfort to know they didn't set us down right when we hit Nova Scotia and said the flight was going to be diverted to Boston. Then later they landed in Bangor, Maine.
Jeanne Meserve reports as Homeland Security Correspondent
Jeanne said, "After the Christmas Day Bombing, one of the short-term security measures is that flight attendants wanted to have a clear view of what people are doing under a blanket so they will ask for them. She also said, "It is pretty unusual for a federal air marshall to break their cover. They normally closely guard their identities unless something is serious."
Delta reports that there 235 passengers on board but we don't know what the situation is. It appears that the passenger made a comment that he had explosives on board.
Sometimes people have too much to drink and they say things they really don't mean. We have to wait and see. So far, no sign of explosives and there is no report of anything that he might have done."

Post a CommentGood report. Had heard about this.
It just isn't okay to joke about such things on a flight. Good write-up.
Good reporting. I assume he will be locked away for a while. I included this item in my Offbeat News for today too.
I heard about this on the news and googled for more information. First link was to the Paris/Maine flight in Dec (MSNBC). Your article was next. Thanks for keeping us informed.
Who in this day and age would make a joke about explosives while on an airplane. There is an end game here. It will be interesting if the public is ever told the true story. Kudos to the flight attendants for their handling of a scarey, and possibly dangerous situation.
Scary stuff.
cheers on the report, Kay.
Wow! Sounds dramatic for an "unruly" passenger. Must have been a bomb scare! Great reporting!
