Divine Intervention to Inspire Your Quest Towards a Healthier You

Growing Together in Faith and Fitness: 1 Corinthians 12:24-26

The pursuit of improved personal health and physical fitness remains an arduous path, lined with good intentions, for countless aspiring exercisers. Although the fitness industry generally approaches health from a singularly physical standpoint, I sincerely invite you to draw from divine sources of inspiration to reinvent your current fitness mindset. Adopting an integrated approach to fitness will ultimately allow us to grow together in health, but restore our spiritual strength and commitment, as well.

Paul eloquently discusses the interrelated nature of our physical bodies in a letter to the Corinthians, "God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it" (NIV, 1 Corinthians 12:24-26).

Each person exists with unique features, skills, and talents, together making up the greater body of humans on this Earth. Ultimately, our individual choices constantly affect the lives and health of others. Improving one self, but neglecting to aid those in need, creates the division Paul warned against. As brothers and sisters, we are granted countless opportunities to unite and work towards positive change, or remain divided and suffer the consequences of selfishness, hate, and discrimination.

Our physical bodies and minds remain a tremendous reflection of God's creation, embodying our Father's love, power, and care. Through this brief passage in Corinthians, God invites us to come to greater understanding of the health of our bodies. Each member should be continuously developed and improved towards our limitless potential. By strengthening the individual parts, we are strengthening their respective systems. Subsequently, improvements within each system enhance the overall health of our bodies. The inherent interrelatedness of our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health remain repeatedly overlooked by individuals aspiring towards positive changes.

As advised by Paul, our physical fitness does not occur in a vacuum. Each segment of our health (i.e. sleep, stress, exercise, nutrition, and hormones) constantly interacts with the others to either contribute positively or negatively towards our overall health. Neglecting one aspect of the "total health sphere," such as nutrition, may single-handedly derail our otherwise valiant efforts towards weight loss, or lasting improvements. When each segment becomes balanced, we allow our bodies to function as God intended, vibrant with life, energy, and purpose.

A unified mind, body, and spirit approach to fitness remains essential to unlocking one's true individual potential. A deeply-rooted, faith-based relationship with God subsequently unleashes the power of positive thinking on a daily basis, delivering purpose and meaning throughout our lives (and in our workouts). Empowered by God, we are confidently able to push our minds and bodies to new heights, allowing each part to unite to emphatically "rejoice" and honor our Creator.
