Divine Irony

Wayne Howard

He's conceived out of wedlock,
Born in a stable;
The infant king of kings holds court.

A slaughter of innocents
Visions of warning
Midnight exodus to Egypt

The wilderness temptations
Ply him with power,
But the Word is victorious.

At the Passover Seder
The Lamb is the Host;
They feast on His body and blood.

The tools of the carpenter,
Nails and a hammer,
Nail the Carpenter to a tree.

The high priest intones Kaddish,
Sacrifice ready;
The Lamb perishes on the hill.

Put in a secondhand tomb,
Two nights despairing;
Out of darkness, the Sun rises.
