Division of Colors

A Short Poem on Segregation

Chris Jones
There are places where the colors don't mix,

with blacks and whites separated by tall barriers.

Society imposes restrictions on the colored,

forcing them into different public places;

and even forces the children into separate schools.

Yet there are strong willed individuals,

who struggle to end the segregation.

Each holding a sign high above their head;

each taking a step towards victory;

and ultimately, equality for all.

Sadly, tension saturates the air.

the whites look condescendingly upon the blacks,

thinking that the protests are unnecessary.

But the blacks keep taking strides around the blocks,

with each step carrying them towards a better life.

As the clock strikes two in the afternoon,

the people are still determined as ever,

with perseverance radiating from them;

and among the masses of people,

even small children wield signs of protest...
