DIY 4th of July Candle Holders Made from Terra-Cotta Flower Pots

Mary Drew
A do it yourself Fourth of July decoration can brighten up your home and your Fourth of July B.B.Q or party. You can use these terra-cotta flowerpot candle holders both inside and outdoors and they look fabulous. If you are having an Independence Day get together, you can make these ahead of time and use them during the day as cute decorations on the tables and at night to add a little extra light.

Things you will need:

Terra-cotta flower pots - Three inch pots will fit a standard sized candle but any size flower pots will work great. (I found a ton of different size terra-cotta flower pots at yard sales and rummage sales for pennies each. Making this project very inexpensive)
Acrylic craft paint - Silver, red, white and blue (The silver is totally optional)
Paint brushes- Any standard craft type paint brushes will be good.
Candles - In various sizes to match the size of your flowerpots (I used medium to large citronella candles in my medium to large painted flower pots. The citronella really helps at night when the mosquitoes come out.)

Step One: Paint the inside of several (do as many as needed) terra-cotta flowerpots with acrylic silver craft paint. You can use any color you would like but the silver gives the lighted candle a nice reflection of light from the flame.

Step Two: Let the inside of the painted terra-cotta flower pots dry completely and then give them a second coat.

Step Three: Paint your Fourth of July design on the outer side of the terra-cotta flower pots. I just painted mine in solid red, then white and then blue ones and used many various sized terra-cotta flower pots and candles. Have fun with this and get as creative as you want. Here, less is more - does not apply!

Step Four: Let the flower pots dry completely, I would give them twenty four hours to completely dry inside and out before putting a candle in them.

Step Five: Place your size appropriate candles in the matching size appropriate Independence Day painted flower pot candle holders.

Step Six: Place on tables as center pieces during the day, light candles at dusk and enjoy your Fourth of July decoration!
