DIY: 5 Halloween Tutu Costume Ideas for Girls

Lyn McCallister
You can create unique or traditional Halloween costumes for girls of all ages by using tutus as part of the design. A tutu is a skirt made from multiple layers of tulle, a very lightweight and gauzy fabric.

If you sew, you can easily make these costumes yourself with a little advance planning. If you do not sew, check the section at the end of this article on where to purchase one for your little girl this Halloween.

Be creative with these costumes, and let your child help with the design process. Embellish the costumes by adding ribbons, sparkles, buttons, or other trims to create a truly one-of-a-kind Halloween costume that you and your daughter will treasure.

Halloween Tutu Costumes: The Lady Bug
This classic costume is perfect for infants up to kindergarten. The bright red color in this costume will be sure to delight your little one. The ladybug costume base consists of a long or short sleeve black shirt and matching leggings. Create the tutu by using red tulle and adding black polka-dots for the ladybug effect. Purchase or make ladybug wings. Complete the outfit with a black headband with cheerful red balls for the antennae.

Halloween Tutu Costumes: The Pumpkin Princess
This fun spin on the traditional princess costume lets your daughter become the princess of the pumpkin patch. Choose a long or short sleeve solid orange shirt and matching leggings for the base. Make the tutu from orange tulle. Add green leaf accents to the top of the orange shirt and around the tops of the shoes. Accent the costume by creating a leaf hat.

Halloween Tutu Costumes: The Bumble Bee
This traditional costume is very sweet on younger girls. Your daughter will buzz with delight over this cheerful look. Make the base by purchasing a long or shirt sleeve black shirt and matching leggings. Create the tutu from both yellow and black tulle. For the best effect, use the yellow tulle as the primary color and the black tulle as a striped accent. Purchase or make yellow bumble bee wings. Add a black headband with yellow ball antennae to complete this cute Halloween costume.

Halloween Tutu Costumes: The Witch
This is a great tutu costume for older girls. Let your daughter help choose the accent color. Great accent colors are purple, green, or orange. Select a long sleeve or short sleeve black shirt and leggings for your base. Use both black tulle and tulle in an accent color to create the witch's shirt. You can try a striped skirt, polka-dot skirt, or wavy skirt effect. Purchase a black witch's hat and wrap bands of the accent tulle around the hat as a finishing touch.

Halloween Tutu Costumes: The Traditional Princess
If your daughter is pretty in pink, then consider modifying the traditional princess gown with a princess tutu costume. She will be unique in a crowd of Halloween princesses. Use a long or short sleeve pink shirt and leggings as your base. Create the princess skirt from shimmery pink tulle. Another option is to layer the pink tulle with silver tulle for extra sparkle. Create a matching crown and wand to create the look.
