DIY Asian Home Decorating: Bamboo Curtains

Holly Matheson
A great deal of the appeal of bamboo curtains is the ability that they have to bring the touches of nature right into your home while protecting your room from the heat of the sun's rays. While they may seem difficult, bamboo curtains are actually quite simple and inexpensive to make at home on your own.

You Will Need:
Saw with a fine blade
copper wiring
wood panels
screw or nail hooks
a piece of cloth
bamboo strips

Directions
Take a visit to your local home improvement store and invest in some thinly cut strips of bamboo that will be enough to complete your project. The straighter your strips of bamboo are, the better quality you will receive of your bamboo curtain. If the home improvement store does not have bamboo at the length that you desire it, chances are you may wind up having to cut the strips yourself. If this is the case, use your fine blade saw to tear in a back and forth motion at your bamboo strips until you have reached the desired amount and size. Next, boil your strips of bamboo in hot water just until they are softened and have a silky texture to them. Once your bamboo strips have boiled for the proper alloted time, remove them from the water and towel dry. Aligning your bamboo strips so as to get them all in the same direction, weave your copper wiring around the strips of bamboo. To do this, tightly wrap the wire a few times around a single strip of bamboo and then alternate your direction and continue on to the next strip. The amount of distance between each bamboo strip is up to you, depending upon your desired look and the purposes that your bamboo curtain will serve. Leaving some extra wire at the base of your curtain, attach a wooden panel and finally incorporate the nail hooks so that you can put your bamboo curtains to use.

By following these few simple steps, bringing the appeal and elegance of nature and the Asian culture right into your own home is simple and can be a very fun project that you or your family can all enjoy.
