DIY Bike Tutorial: How to Install a New Seat

Eloah James
This tutorial will explain how to remove and replace your existing bicycle seat with a new seat. The steps will differ slightly depending on whether your bike has a single or a double bolt clamp which is holding the seat in place on the post.

Step 1 - Double Bolts If your seat has a double bolt set up on the post, start by loosening both bolts equally. It may be necessary to undo one side entirely in order to remove the old seat and/or install the new seat. This will depend completely on the post set up you have, as it varies by manufacturer.

Step 2 - Double Bolts Remove the existing bicycle seat.

Step 3 - Double BoltsSlide the new seat onto the post and loosely retighten the bolts.

Step 4 - Double Bolts Adjust the centering of the seat as needed, so that it is aligned neither left nor right, but dead center.

Step 5 - Double Bolts Tighten the bolts a bit more and sit astride the bike to determine whether the seat needs to be lowered or raised. Adjust the height of the new seat as necessary.

Step 6 (optional) - Double Bolts If your seat is so equipped, make adjustments to the tilt of the seat.

Step 7 - Double Bolts Tighten both bolts completely.

Step 1 - Single Bolt If your bike has a single bolt clamp on the seat post, completely unscrew (but do not remove) the bolt, then turn the upper portion of the clamp sideways to the left or right.

Step 2 - Single Bolt Remove the old seat.

Step 3 - Single Bolt Attach the new seat, return the top of the clamp back into the original position (aligned with the bottom portion) and loosely retighten the bolt.

Step 4 - Single Bolt Adjust the centering of the seat from left to right as needed.

Step 5 - Single Bolt Tighten the bolt a bit more and sit astride the bike to determine whether the seat needs to be lowered or raised. Adjust the height of the new seat as necessary.

Step 6 (optional) - Single Bolt If your seat is so equipped, make adjustments to the tilt of the seat.

Step 7 - Single Bolt Tighten the seat down completely.
