DIY Boy Haircuts: Save Money Using an Electric Razor to Give Boy Haircuts at Home

Are you looking at ways to cut your budget? Try your barber bill. You can save about $120 a year by giving your boy a haircut at home, with very little upfront cost. Here are some tips on how use an electric razor to give your son a haircut at home.

Boy Haircuts at Home: Get the Right Equipment

The most important step for preparing to give boy haircuts at home is to purchase a good electric razor kit. I use Conair's 13-piece 'Haircuts at Home' kit, which I purchased a year ago for approximately $25. The Conair 'Haircuts at Home' electric razor kit is perfect for doing boy haircuts at home, because it comes with all the necessary comb attachment guides, a cape, a detail trimmer, scissors and an instructional DVD.

Boy Haircuts at Home: Prepare Your Area

Choose an area in your home to temporarily set up as your haircut station. Opt for a linoleum or tile floor, and put a garbage can nearby to deposit the hair.

If you have a bar stool, use it. Not only will the height of the stool save on your back, it will encourage your boy to sit still during his haircut. If you don't have a bar stool, a swivel chair or straight back kitchen chair will work too.

Boy Haircuts at Home: Prepare the Electric Razor

Choose which length attachment guide you want to use for the boy's haircut. Keep in mind, the higher the number, the longer the hair will be. When in doubt, opt for a longer length. You can always go back over your boy's hair with a shorter attachment guide if the haircut is too long.

Make sure the electric razor is clean and oiled. If an electric razor isn't well-oiled, the razor will tug and pull your boy's hair.

Boy Haircuts at Home: Buzz Your Boy's Hair

Secure the cape around your boy's neck. If you don't have a cape, a towel wrapped around his shoulders will work too. Secure the towel with some hair clips.

Start with the detail work. Buzz the front and around his ears first. Shave against the grain when giving a boy haircut, moving the electric razor in the opposite direction from how the hair grows.

Use short strokes and go slowly when giving boy haircuts. The faster you go, the more it will hurt, the more your boy will squirm, and the longer it will take.

Once the hair is buzzed to the desired length, go over it again to catch any long hairs you may have missed. Pay special attention to any cowlicks, especially at the crown of your boy's head, and buzz it at all angles.

Use scissors to cut any long hairs around the ears. Take the comb attachment off the electric razor and shave his sideburns to an appropriate length. Shave the back of the neck to even up the hairline.

Once the haircut is done, let your boy jump in the shower to rinse off, and don't forget to change your shirt. You will be hairy!

Boy Haircuts at Home: Results May Vary

Practice makes perfect. The first time doing boy haircuts at home, you may be nervous, and you may have to touch up long hairs later. However, keep in mind that hair grows back, and think about all the time and money you will save giving boy haircuts at home. You will be able to tackle using an electric razor to give your boy a mohawk at home in no time.

I don't recommend giving a boy haircut in the bathtub. Although it may seem like the hairy mess would be contained, it also plugs the drain!

Great job. My little boy hasn't been for a professional haircut yet. He's three. I do it myself. This is really great info.

Good money saver. When I was a cosmetologist many people just tried to mooch off me...I no longer own shears. :-)
