Homemade Cinco de Mayo decorations are very popular due to the ease of making them. Perhaps the most popular do it yourself decoration is the balloon piñata. Craft makers should obtain a balloon, newspaper, large balloon, water, flour, paint, paintbrush, yarn, candy and other prizes, broom handle or bat, and blindfold. Before beginning anything mix the flour and water together to make a pasty mixture. Tear the newspaper into strips and dip each strip into the pasty mixture. After blowing up the balloon, place the strips of newspaper onto the balloon until it is completely covered. The piñata may need to dry for 1-2 days. After the balloon has completely dried, decorate it with bright and festive colors. Use paint or any other decorative object. Next cut off the top of the balloon and place holes along the top edge. Next place yarn through the holes and tie it together. The piñata can now be hung up. Lastly fill the balloon up with candy and other goodies and it is ready for the party.
No party is complete without flowers. This homemade Cinco de Mayo decoration can really help to set the festive tone of the party. This is a very inexpensive Cinco de Mayo decoration. The materials needed are various colors of tissue paper, scissors, chenille stems and ribbons. Take the various colors of tissue paper and cut tissue paper circles. Make sure to use various colors and cut them up in 3 different sizes. Each flower will require 2 small circles, 2 medium circles, and 2 large circles. Next in order to form the flower shape, take the 2 small circles and place them on top of the 2 medium circles and then lastly place them on top of the 2 large circles. Take the chenille stem and make a U. Take it and push it through the 6 layer flower so that both ends of the stem go through the entire pile. Take the stem ends and twist them together on the bottom of the flower for the stem. Using creative ways fold each circle to make the petals. Do this a few more times to make a bouquet, tie them together with ribbon and maybe use them as a center piece. The website HowStuffWorks.com shows pictures of the completed project.
To honor the Mexican heritage the last Cinco de Mayo decoration will be the Mexican flag. The materials needed are a flag pattern, cardstock paper, red, green and white tissue paper, glue , markers, a color picture of the Mexican flag, red or green yarn and masking tape. A flag pattern can be printed off of the internet from www.theholidayzone.com. Take the flag pattern and copy in on the cardstock paper. Get the tissue paper and tear it into small strips which are then crumbled into small balls. The tissue balls will then be used to color in the flag's color. Markers, paint or other decorations can be used to fill in any spots or color anything extra. This is where the color picture of the Mexican flag is handy. Attach yarn to the back of the flag using masking tap and show Cinco de Mayo spirit.
