DIY Comic Inspired Vintage Jewelry

Holly Matheson
Making your own jewelry is a craft enjoyed largely throughout the world, whether it be for the sake of culture, personal style, developing a unique product for your line of merchandise and your own style, or just for the plain fun of making jewelry. The possibilities that await are endless and when you make your own jewelry the chances of someone having the exact same piece of jewelry as you are very slim. While you may not have considered the idea to make your own jewelry before, even the beads that you use in your designs can be made by you. This not only adds personal touch to your jewelry, but the time that you take to do it yourself will actually be quite relaxing and fun.

Another great thing about DIY jewelry is the opportunity that it gives the wearer to show off their personal style. Perhaps you're into vintage fashions and have a love for comic books. You may have never entertained the idea of combining both of these things to create one fabulous and unique item, but what better way is there to entertain your love for vintage than by jumping at the opportunity to make your own jewelry out of some of your favorite comic books?

This DIY jewelry is very simple to create, but the possibilities in variations are endless so don't hesitate to incorporate your own personal touch into your necklace, bracelet or other jewelry of your preference. The beads used in this design will be constructed from the pages of comic books so be sure not to use any that are valuable or hold sentimental value to you. Instead, opt for purchasing a copy of your favorite comic books or use the pages of an older one that is low in value.

What You Will Need:

a few pages from your comic book of preference
clear tape
non-permanent marker
toothpick
ruler
hemp string (any color)

Directions:

The first thing you will need to do in creating your comic jewelry is select a few pages from your comic book. Depending on whether you are making a necklace, bracelet or other piece of jewelry this design shouldn't take very many pages. For this specific design you should probably be able to get about ten beads per page. If you need a bead template there are many online readily available but it is just as simple to create your beads without the need for a template. Using your ruler and non-permanent marker begin on one of the longer sides of your comic page and draw a long narrow triangle horizontally across the paper. Your starting point should be the tip of your triangle with the base at the opposite side of the page. After you have drawn out your shapes across the entire length of the page, cut them out and wipe away any excess marker as you do not want it to show through on your beads.

The next step will be to take your toothpick and, beginning at the base of your first bead, roll the toothpick up in the comic until you have reached the point of your triangle shape. Remove the toothpick and secure the tip with a thinly cut piece of clear tape. To increase the strength and add some shine to your beads you can carefully wrap the entire bead with clear tape if you wish. Continue this process until you have constructed the desired amount of beads for your project.

Once you have completed the beads for your DIY comic inspired vintage jewelry it is time to string them and complete your fashion accessory. Keep in mind when purchasing your hemp string for your jewelry that you may want to choose a bold color to enhance the appeal of your beads if your hemp is going to be noticeable when looking at your jewelry. Comics are colorful, so don't be afraid to get a little creative with the color of your hemp.
If you are not familiar with hemp knots, www.hot-to-make-jewelry.com offers a variety of knot tying techniques to get you started on stringing your beads. Depending on how elaborate you want your jewelry to be, you can choose to go with a simple knot or for those who are advanced in making jewelry you may want to choose something a little more complex. Perform the desired knot tying techniques, incorporating your comic beads into the mix of things and finally secure with a clasp or a final knot in your hemp.

Designing your own do it yourself jewelry can be not only fun, but it is a great way in which you can show off your love for vintage while preserving images from your favorite comics. The ideas and options are endless as to designing a piece of jewelry which is completely unique and set apart from others. The best thing is, while everyone is complimenting your fashionable new piece of jewelry, you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that it is a one of a kind piece that you created yourself.
