DIY Construction Zone Birthday

Do you have a little construction worker with a birthday? Why not throw them a birthday party with a construction zone theme? Since you can use many of the toys that your birthday boy has on hand, this theme makes a great DIY project. Here are a few ideas to help you build a great birthday.

Invitations: For invitations to your construction zone birthday, cut orange construction paper in the shape of a diamond. Use a black marker to write "CONSTRUCTION ZONE" on the front. Inside, invite the guests to join the men at work. Use construction language, such as "Join the crew for ____(your child's name) birthday. Construction will begin on ______ (date and time of party) at _______ (place of party). Give each guest a plastic hard hat to wear as they arrive.

Decorations: Use basic construction colors of orange and yellow as your base for decorations and party supplies. Make large "Construction Zone", "Men at Work" and "Roadwork" signs out of construction paper to hang. Use yellow or orange caution tape and orange traffic cones to go around the perimeter of the party area. Use construction toys, such as a plastic or metal bulldozer, as table decorations. Use a large metal toy dump truck with the back filled with candy as a centerpiece for the table.

Snacks: Serve snacks such as dirt pudding and cheese blocks. Provide sandwich materials and let the guests build their own sandwiches.

Cake: The cake for a construction zone party can be very simple. Bake a square cake, then turn it on its side for a diamond-shape. Frost it with orange icing, then decorate it to look like a construction sign. Or, decorate a sheet cake to look like a construction site, with a road, trees, etc. Make dirt piles with chocolate frosting and cookie crumbs. Place toy dump trucks, bulldozers, and construction signs on the cake. Use candy corn for traffic cones.

Games: Have a bean bag toss using large metal dump trucks. Divide the guests into teams, and see which team can toss the most bean bags into the truck. For very small children, you may wish to make your own larger truck out of a cardboard box. If your guests are toddlers, create a digging construction zone in a sandbox using trucks, shovels, etc.

Goodie Bags: Send the guests home with construction-related items, such as a plastic hammer and saw. Include stickers that have a construction theme, as well as sidewalk chalk.

These are just a few of the many ideas for a DIY construction zone party. Be creative and use what you have on hand, and you can build a great party without digging into your wallet!
