DIY Crocheted Slipper Flats

Cyndee Kromminga
Crocheting is a relaxing pastime. Just curl up with a ball of yarn and enjoy the continuous rhythm of the stitches. These crocheted slippers remind me of slippers I had in my youth when all I wanted to be was a ballerina. Most of the time I ended up skating on the hardwood floors and trying to avoid the splinters. These slippers can be quickly stitched together in an evening. Make several pairs as thoughtful birthday and Christmas gifts. They are made by holding two strands of yarn together, which produces a bulkier stitch and a faster finish. Use the same color for each strand or two different colors for a lovely blend. Because the stitches in the yarn are flexible, these crocheted flat slippers are a one size fits most in a teenage to adult size.

Materials needed:

Two skeins 4-ply worsted weight yarn
J crochet hook
Scissors

Stitch guide:

Slip stitch-Insert the hook in a stitch, yarn over and pull through the loop on the hook.
Single crochet-Insert the hook in a stitch, yarn over and pull through the stitch, yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook.
Double crochet-Yarn over and insert the hook in the stitch, yarn over and pull through the stitch.(Yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook). Repeat two times.
Triple crochet-Yarn over the hook two times and insert the hook in the stitch, yarn over and pull through the stitch.(Yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook). Repeat three times.

Steps to crochet slipper flats:

Make two slippers.

Round 1-Hold two strands of yarn together and chain 24. Double crochet in the third chain from the hook and in the remaining 22 chain stitches across. Stitch three double crochet stitches on the end. Turn the chain around and double crochet across the other side of the chain. Stitch three double crochet stitches on the end. Slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain.

Round 2-Chain 2. Double crochet in the next 22 double crochet stitches. Stitch two double crochet stitches in each of the next three stitches. Double crochet in the next 22 stitches. Stitch two double crochet stitches in each of the next three stitches. Slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain.

Round 3-Chain 2. Double crochet in each stitch around for a total of 56 double crochet stitches.

Round 4-Chain. 3. Triple crochet in the first two stitches and triple crochet decrease in the next two stitches. (Triple crochet in the next three stitches and triple crochet decrease in the next two stitches) four times. (Triple crochet decrease in the next two stitches) two times. (Triple crochet in the next three stitches and triple crochet decrease in the next two stitches) five times. (Triple crochet decrease in the next two stitches) two times. Slip stitch to the top of the beginning chain.

Rounds 5-Chain 1. (Single crochet in the first stitch and single crochet decrease the next two stitches.). Repeat around the round. Slip stitch to the beginning chain stitch. Fasten off and weave in the yarn on the inside of the slipper.

Draw string-Hold two strands of yarn together and chain 75. Turn and single crochet along one side, two single crochet in the end, single crochet along the other side and two single crochet in the end. Slip stitch to the next stitch and fasten off. Weave in the end. Make two.

Determine which end will be the heel of the slipper. Insert the draw string through a triple crochet stitch on the heel, and weave one end of the draw string in an out of the other triple crochet stitches to the toe end of the slipper. Weave the other end of the draw string in and out of the triple crochet stitches on the other side of the slipper to the toe end. Adjust the draw string and tie the draw string in a bow. Repeat for the other slipper.
