Donna Cosmato
Want to throw a Fourth of July party but funds are low? DIY (do-it-yourself) July 4th decorations are fun and simple and the whole family can participate.

Here are some ideas for table decorations for a July 4th celebration. A guide to instructions for a kid-friendly and unique child-size mini-float are also included. Supplies are reasonably priced items found at local discount, thrift, or dollar stores.

Table Decorations

A festive, colorful table adornment sets the atmosphere for any Fourth of July decoration effort. For an inexpensive party set-up:

Gold and silver metallic gift wrap, one roll of each color

White tablecloth

Red and blue paper or plastic plates and cutlery

White napkins, cloth or paper

Assorted sizes of gold and silver cut-out stars -- Star pattern can be found here: familycrafts.about.com/library/projects/blstarorn.htm

Reduce or enlarge the pattern to yield an assortment of star sizes.

What to do

Cut stars from gold and silver paper. On party day, cover table with white tablecloth, and set place settings alternating blue and red plates with matching cutlery. Place a white napkin in the center of each plate. Scatter the stars across the tablecloth in a pleasing pattern.

Inexpensive Fourth of July Centerpiece Decoration

Supplies:

Large clear glass bowl

1 red or blue 4" - 6" diameter pillar candle

1 - 2 packages of clear glass stones (quantity needed depends on size of glass bowl)

Pillar candles and glass stones are in-stock at local dollar stores now, so shop now for the best selection of items for July 4th decorating. Position candle inside the glass bowl. Carefully pour glass stones around the base of the candle to anchor it. Place centerpiece on decorated table.

July 4th Party Shaker Decorations

Supplies:

One cardboard tube (from empty toilet paper rolls) per guest

I package dried pinto beans

Remainder of gold and silver paper used for making stars

Red or blue metallic curling ribbon (from dollar store), cut into 12" strips

One roll of masking or duct tape

Scotch tape

Place a handful of dried beans in cardboard tube. Use masking tape or duct tape to seal the tube ends. Measure and cut enough paper to cover tube, leaving about 2" excess at each end. Cover tube with paper, tape securely. Gather up excess paper and tie tightly close to the end of the tube. Curl ribbons by scoring lightly with the inside of scissors. Pull gently on the curls to arrange. Place finished shakers in the middle of the white napkins on each plate.
