DIY: Dog Bed Ideas

Angela Tague
If you love to spoil your dog as much as I do, he has his own bed. Dog beds also provide a much needed retreat from other pets and pestering children. Whether you purchase a dog bed from the local pet store or try one of these do-it-yourself dog bed ideas by recycling items in your home, your pet will appreciate having his very own warm soft place to snooze.

Homemade Dog Beds: Blankets
If worn out comforters and torn blankets are taking up space in the bottom of your closet, why not donate them to the dog? Although the exterior may not be beautiful, the soft fabric and padding would be appreciated by your pet. Simply fold the blankets into a square. For extra comfort, layer two or more blankets. When the dog bed gets soiled or needs to be refreshed, simply toss it in the washing machine. Unlike many oversized pet beds, blankets are easy to wash at home.

Homemade Dog Beds: Cushions
Before you take an old couch to the dump, remove the seat cushions. Even if they are stained and worn through in areas, your dog won't mind. The cushions can easily become a thick, supportive dog bed. If the couch cushions are in a zippered case, remove them. Wash the fabric, and allow the cushion to air-out. Then place the cushion back inside the zippered case, and place it in your pet's kennel.

Homemade Dog Beds: Laundry Baskets
Puppies often make everyday household items into a bed. A laundry basket full of soft clothing that smells like a dog's human parents is no exception. Consider donating an old laundry basket to a small family dog. Place an old blanket or sweatshirt in the bottom for padding, and you have an instant cozy dog bed.

Homemade Dog Beds: Pillows
When the stuffing is worn and your pillows aren't as robust as they used to be, consider giving them to your dog. Even though they may be a little lumpy and flat, they are appreciated by a dog. From body pillows to decorative couch pillows, dogs aren't fussy. Slip the pillow in a pillow case that can be laundered and you have an easy do-it-yourself dog bed.
