DIY Dragonfly Light Plate Craft

Kids and adults can make this easy dragonfly light cover or switch plate cover. If you are decorating a room in a dragonfly theme for you child, then check out this easy way to decorate the plastic light switch covers in a dragonfly theme.

To decorate the light covers in a dragonfly theme you will need:

Plastic Light Switch Plates

Air Drying Clay or Oven Fire Clay

Paint

Paint Brushes

To get started you will need to take your air drying clay and roll it out into a slab that is about ΒΌ inch thick. You need to keep this around that thickness so you can make sure your old screws will still hold this in the wall.

Now, take your plastic light cover and press it into the clay. Front side should be pressed into the clay. You will get an impression of where the holes are for the switch and the screws.

Use a toothpick to cut out these holes. Dip your fingers in water to smooth edges.

Now, on to the dragonflies for your light switch cover. You want to take small pieces of clay and coil them to make the body of the dragonfly.

Press the body into the clay. To really make it stick you can scratch small Xs on the bottom of the body and on the clay cover. Add a little water and press into place.

Use the remained of the slab of clay to trace out wings with the toothpick. Peel it out and press onto the clay light switch cover in the same manner described above. At this pint you want to smooth edges with yoru fingers, add more dragonflies, and finish off with small details.

You can use tooth picks to carve in the antennae, eyes, and more detail on the body.

You will also want to check the screw holes to make sure yoru existing screws fit through them. It is a good idea to reuse the screws to attach your dragonfly switch plate to the wall. Otherwise you will have to look for longer screws in the same size.

Once the clay has dried you can paint the dragonfly light cover in any colors you wish. It is also a great idea to seal it with clear acrylic spray paint. Try to apply a few coats, letting each one dry in between.

Once dry you can reinstall the dragonfly switch plate cover and enjoy! Kids will love making this fun craft and using it.
