For this craft, you will need:
- Nine bandanas, red in color
- One bandana, blue in color
- Denim scrap fabric
- Two yards matching solid colored red fabric, preferably with a soft texture
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Pins
- Iron and ironing board
- Fiberfill
- White eyelet ruffling, six yards
Start by taking two bandanas and placing them face side together. Pin one half inch in and sew them together using a straight stitch. Open them up, and place another bandana face with the left side of the two together bandanas. Pin one half inch in and sew together, again using a straight stitch. Repeat the process until you have a "quilt" square of bandanas, three across and three down. Use a warm iron to press the seams to the back of the bandanas.
Cut out a star shape from the blue bandana and sew in the center of the red bandana fabric. Cut out the letters in the child's name from denim scrap fabric, and sew those as well to the bandana fabric.
Cut enough solid colored fabric to match the size of the bandana fabric. Place the right side of the solid fabric and the right side of the bandana print together, with a strip of one inch wide white eyelet ruffling between the two layers of fabric, all the way around. (The eyelet ruffling will face the inside, so when the fabric is sewn together and turned inside out, the ruffling will stick out the edge.) Sew three of the four sides together, and turn the project inside out so that the right side of the fabric is outward.
Stuff the project lightly with fiberfill. (Note: Do not fill too much or it can turn a blanket quickly into a large pillow, and that is not the intention.) Sew up the remaining side with the eyelet ruffling sticking out.
Your bandana print baby blanket is now complete! Enjoy!
TIP: Bandanas come in a variety of colors, so feel free to venture outside the red or blue color scheme usually associated with them. Also, for a boy baby the eyelet ruffling can be replaced with a two inch strip of denim, folded in half to create a border.
