DIY Framed Embossed Velvet Wall Art

Cristen Ward
My Mother had a 1/4 yard of velvet that belonged to my Grandmother who had passed, she didn't want to part with it , so she thought of laying it down over her coffee table as a runner. While she procrastinated for a year or so, the dust collected as it just sat on the closet shelf. Lifeless. I came across it one day, and she asked if I would care to take it. Of course I replied yes. Now the hard part was.....thinking of what to do with it. Knowing that it belonged to her mother, I wanted to preserve the sentiment. So rite away I got to work and came up with this idea. Needless to say, after completion, I wrapped it up and gave it to my mother as a gift.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
Matted Frame (size of your choice)
Iron
1 Large Rubber Stamp
Scissors
Velvet (you only need a piece as big as your frame opening)
Face Cloth
Fabric Chalk
White Fabric Glue

Disassemble your frame. Now take your velvet and place it face down on a flat surface. Next take your frame matte and lay it over your fabric and trace the outside perimeter. Take your scissors and cut along your chalk lines.

Heat your iron to a steam setting. Once heated take your rubber stamp and lay it face up. The stamp you use should be brand new, free of ink or dyes. The less detailed the stamp is, the better the effect. In this case I used a large Irish claddah, since my grandmother was very strong on her Irish descent, and the velvet was green. Take your velvet and lay it over the stamp face down, and center. Now take your face cloth and lay it over the back of your velvet. This creates a protective barrier between the iron and velvet. Also this helps to assure that it wont burn. Firmly run your iron over the entire raised surface for about 20 seconds, while giving it a spritz of steam, every couple of seconds or so. Now put your iron down and carefully pull up your velvet. Place face up on a flat surface and let cool.

Now take your matte and give the back a few dabs of white fabric glue, lay it face up over your velvet that is laying face up and center it over your motif. Give it a firm pushing so the fabric adheres to the matte. Now reassemble your frame and hang.
