DIY Halloween Costume Guide: The Smurfs

The Smurfs was an awesome cartoon from the 1980s. The Smurfs were little animated, blue people that lived in Smurf Village. They all had names like Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Lazy Smurf, Grouchy Smurf, Brainy Smurf, etc. The Smurfs were a kind community and dealt with life's adventures together. It is no longer on television though, which is a shame because it was a great cartoon!

This Halloween why not show some love and remembrance to them by becoming a Smurf for the day!

First, pick a Smurf character you'd like to dress up as. Look up pictures of your Smurfs character to get ideas if you need to. BlueBuddies is a good reference site. You can also be your own Smurf if you'd like.

For Smurf skin, you can either use body paint in a bright blue color on all exposed skin or you can choose to wear a bright blue clothing. Blue body paint can be found at most all Halloween stores. Liquid Latex is a good choice if you'll need a lot of body paint. If you go the clothing route, you'll need a bright blue long sleeve shirt and blue leggings or tights for the ladies. You'll still need blue paint for your face, but at least you won't be wearing hot body paint all night long.

All of the smurfs usually always wore white. With this homemade Smurfs costume, guys will need white scrub pants. If you're becoming Papa Smurf, you'll need red scrub pants or red sweat pants. Ladies will wear any short white summer dress or solid white tank top and skirt.

The smurf hats can be white beenie hats, white towels wrapped around your head and pinned with safety pins, or even a white tee shirt that you put on then pull over your head, stopping when the neck part is around your head like a head band, then wrap and tuck the rest of the shirt around your head and style in place with safety pins. Papa Smurfs hat will be red instead of white.

The Smurfs wore white "shoes" as well. Men can wear any white sneakers, white crocs, and women will wear white clogs, white ballet slippers, or closed toe white pumps. Big white bedroom shoes is another option.

Smurfs have blue tails that you'll need with this costume. You can roll up a sock and pin it to your pants, or create one out of a huge mound of cotton balls stuffed inside panty hose or leggings, cotton balls should be painted blue unless the leggings are blue already.

Accessorize according to your character. Brainy smurf needs black glasses, Papa Smurf needs a white beard which can be made of cotton balls, bought from the store Halloween aisles, or borrowed from a Santa outfit. Again, take a look online for reference. If you're becoming your own Smurf character, you can accessorize based on what you're creating, like a biker Smurf, fisherman Smurf, pimp Smurf, etc.

The Smurfs costumes would be perfect for two or more people going out for Halloween together!
