DIY Halloween Costumes for Mommy and Baby

Inexpensive Halloween Costumes for Mommy and Baby

k. ferguson
There are many cute and adorable costumes out for Halloween every year, but what to choose for you especially now since you have a little one to tote around with you? Should you be ghoulishly scary and frighten everyone around you, and possibly your little baby, or should you be sweet as pie so everyone gets a cavity when thy snap your picture? Take a look at these Do It Yourself ideas and see which one best suits your needs.

Super Cute- Winnie the Pooh and his Hunny Pot

Winnie the Pooh is an easy costume to make at home, or you can purchase one in the stores. I prefer the homemade ones because they are cheaper and a lot more comfortable in the long run. For the Pooh costume, all you need is a yellow sweat suit, and a red t-shirt. Take the red shirt and cut it in half, so it goes to just above your belly button. Put on the yellow sweats and then put the red shirt on over the yellow sweatshirt. There you are, you are now Winnie the Pooh! It is very easy and comfortable to wear, especially when you are trick-or-treating with a young baby.

Your young one can be your Hunny Pot. This is very simple. All you need to do is get a shirt, about 1 size larger than what he or she wears. Since Pooh's Hunny pots vary in size, shape and color, it doesn't matter what color you choose. Take out your fabric pens or Sharpie's and draw the word "HUNNY" on the middle of the shirt. (Example: https://www.allthatstuff.net/PoohFriends/10.htm)

You can even use a yellow pen to draw spilled honey next to the neckline on the shirt to add extra effect. It sounds very simple, but it comes out very cute!

Sports Fan

This is a simple, yet great way to show your team pride and still show off your little one, too. Every year my husband takes out his San Francisco 49er's jersey and hat and becomes a niner fan for Halloween. Every year I commend him on his costume and tell him I never would have known it was him. He smiles and thanks me.

Check this site out for ideas, and remember, many of them you can make at home for Halloween with shirts and either sticky back felt or markers: http://www.footballfanatics.com/NFL_San_Francisco_49ers_Kids

So, for this year, to put a twist on things, I might just include our new baby daughter, too. Here is what you will need:

Dig in your closet for your team hat, jersey and matching jacket, if you have it.

For your son, dig in his dresser for sweats or shirt and pants that best match your teams colors. Take one of your team hats and make it as small as it will go and place it on his head.

For your daughter, (just because we have one for our daughter), take out the cheerleader romper one of your friends bought her (Ours is a SF 49ers and she looks adorable!), and matching tights.

This is a very easy set up, all it takes it selecting the right pieces and matching them together for the final effect.

Classic Cartoon- Wilma and Pebbles

This year our daughter will be 18 months old for Halloween. This means her hair has finally grown out enough for ponytails, and she looks just like Pebbles from The Flintstones. For this next costume, you will need to dig in your closet again and find a white blouse and white skirt, or solid white, sleeveless dress. Take out your craft beads and look for large white beads to make a necklace similar to Wilma's. (Example: http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat2636&PRODID=xprd634452)

If you do not have any, then you can run out to a craft store and look in their beads department. You can also use small Styrofoam balls and string them like pearls, too. (Just keep baby away from them.) If you have naturally red hair, then you won't need the orange Halloween hair spray. If you are not that lucky, then off to the store you go. While you are there, pick up a white plastic bone to put in your little Pebble's hair to accent her ponytail. Be cautious, though! Do not make it small enough for her to choke on or break apart if she were to pull it out of her hair. Safety first! Now that you are back from the store with the orange spray, it is time for your hair. Pull it back into a ponytail high on the back of your head, not on top. Tease your bangs until they are nice and poofy. Spray your hair in the nice orange and voila! You are Wilma Flintstone.

Now for the little one: Go through her clothes and find cute pink shorts and a tank top. If you have anything with an animal print, that would be even better. (If it is cold out, then you will need to put a white long sleeve onsie on and also a white pair of tights to make sure she stays warm and toasty). Put her hair into a ponytail high on her head and attach the white bone to it. If you worry about the plastic bone, then make a pillow one. All you need to do is get some white felt and fold it in half. Then draw a bone shape on it and cut it out. Make sure you draw it a slight bit bigger on the felt. Then, stitch the sides, leaving one area about two inches long open to turn it and stuff it with fluff. Sew it shut and voila! You have a baby safe hair bone-bow!

Holiday- Easter Bunny and Egg

Our last costume is very cute and super easy to make. All you need is a set of bunny ears, tail and whiskers for Mom, and a cute little outfit and matching hat for baby.

For the ears, you can purchase an adorable set of rabbit ears, or you can make some yourself. For the tail, you can glue cotton balls onto a circle of construction paper with yarn threaded thru the middle as a belt. The amount of cotton balls and size of the circle will depend on the size of the tail you want. For whiskers, you can use eyeliner to draw them on. I do not suggest taping or 'gluing' any to your face because Baby will reach out for them, and Ouchy! She will tear them right off! I will deal with smudges better than welts from missing whiskers. To top off the costume, pick what color bunny you want to be. Grab your sweats, or nice black dress, or pink t-shirt and put on your ears, and tail. You are an Easter Bunny!
