How to Create a Halloween Handprint Bat

1. Start with a piece of plain orange craft or scrapbook paper.

2. Add a generous amount of black paint to a bowl.

3. Apply the black paint to your child's right hand using a paintbrush. If the bowl or container is large enough, you child can press their hand directly into the paint.

4. Press the right hand carefully onto the orange craft paper so that the thumb points upwards and the fingers point towards the right edge of the paper. See article photo for reference.

5. Apply black paint to your child's left hand.

6. Press the left hand carefully onto the orange paper, leaving several inches of space between the handprints. Be sure that the left thumb points upwards and the fingers point towards the left edge of the paper. The handprints form the bat's wings.

7. Allow the paint to dry completely.

8. Use the black marker to draw the bat's head and body. You can have tall, skinny bats or plump, round bats or any shape your child wants to create!

9. Add pointed ears to the bat's head using the black marker.

10. Draw eyes, eyebrows, a mouth, and pointy teeth using the white gel marker.

11. Use the green marker to accent the eyes.

12. Add optional Halloween stickers to your design.

13. Glue the orange paper to a black background or other Halloween themed scrapbook paper to complete the look.

14. Be sure to sign your child's name and date on the back of the project.

Advance Techniques: How to Embellish Your Halloween Handprint Bat

The plain black handprint bats are fun, but embellished bats are limited only to your imagination!

1. Purchase some silver glitter and add it to the black paint for sparkly bats.

2. Make a scary bat by drawing red eyes instead of green eyes.

3. Use puffy black craft paint to make a 3D effect.

4. Cut out the bats and make a Halloween mobile with footprint ghosts as shown in this article.

5. Use black felt paper and cut out the bat's head and body for a fuzzy bat.

6. Make a handprint bat Halloween t-shirt by using fabric paints on a plain orange or white shirt.
