Show some Muggle to wizard love, by dressing up in a Harry Potter Halloween costume. Avid Harry Potter fans will get a thrill out of dressing up as main character, Harry Potter. DIY Harry Potter Halloween costumes are easy and inexpensive to make, for boys and girls.

Harry Potter Halloween Costume: Make-up
No Harry Potter Halloween costume would look authentic, without his trademark scar. This scar is a lightening bolt, in the center of his forehead. For this portion of your Harry Potter Halloween costume, buy a scar make-up kit. These kits retail at dollar stores for $1 to $2. Follow package directions. Another way to get this Harry Potter costume effect, is to draw a small lightening bolt on your forehead, with red lipstick.

Harry Potter Halloween Costume: Hair
Harry Potter has short, messy, brown hair. If you already have brown hair, just use a dab of hair gel or mousse and tousle your hair with it. If you do not have brown hair, purchase brown Halloween costume colored hair spray. This is sold in most discount stores, for about $2. Another option is to use a brown hair dye, that washes out.

For Harry Potter girl costumes, follow the hair color suggestions, above. If you have short hair, also follow styling directions. For girls with longer hair, pull it back in a bun, leaving the top of your hair messy.

Harry Potter Halloween Costume: Clothing
The are a couple clothing options for Harry Potter Halloween costumes. You can just go with a well-worn pair of jeans and a solid color shirt. Just make sure that the clothes are slightly ill-fitting, as Harry is a poor orphan.

Another clothing choice for your Harry Potter Halloween costume is wizard robes. These can be any black robes you can find. Wear a black vest with a red and gold striped tie, to complete this Harry Potter Halloween costume.

If you want your Halloween costume to symbolize Harry Potter as a Quidditch player, you will need red robes. Browse thrift stores for old choir robes or old graduation gowns. Buy yellow or gold fabric and cut out letters to form the name "Potter". Sew these on the back of this Halloween costume. In the same fabric, sew racing stripes along the outside of the sleeves.

A Harry Potter girl costume can use looser boy's clothing. This will help you look like a boy.

Harry Potter Halloween Costume: Accessories
Necessary accessories for a believable Harry Potter costume are glasses and a wand. The glasses should be thick dark frames. You can purchase these at discount stores, for around $5. For the ever-present crack in Harry's lens, I do not recommend actually breaking the glasses. You could risk cutting your face or getting a shard of plastic or glass in your eye. Instead, use a fine point black marker and draw the cracks on the lens.

A wand for your Harry Potter costume can be made from a pointed stick. It should be about 12 inches long, to match Harry Potter's wand.

If you are going for a Quidditch Halloween costume, get a homemade broom. These can be purchased for around $5, in the fall.

My son used to dress up like a Hogwarts student. Very sensible costume for a young teen.
